In his defense, the rule he broke is no longer an NCAA violation.

That's not really relevant and the cover up was probably far worse than the actual violation.  I'm all for given people second chances and if I were to interview him, I would tell him that, those things can't happen here.  It's a moot point anyway.  IMHO, I don't think he was ever interested in our opening.

the problem people have(thjos in the Pearl camp anyway) was that he was probably never given the chance(for all we know, just speculation on my part)

my educated guess is he likely may have spoken with harlan on the phone and there may have even been a day (i.e. later today or tomorrow) that he was to head down to tampa (after auburn) and interview/talk/etc. looks like auburn threw a sack of money at him, and he said yes.

Congrats to Auburn for stepping out aggressively and getting BY FAR the best coach that will be available. Now those who wait like USF is now in the hire and hope mode. The sure thing is gone.

Once the Auburn job and their sacks of money opened up Pearl was not coming here. Everyone but one knew this.

All I need to say is Bobby Petrino (see his coaching record below). We went with Coach Taggart (this is the moment when Woolard should have been shitcanned). We missed out on Petrino and now we missed out on Pearl. People can clean their act up when they realize they're down to their last opportunity. Little 'ole Western Kentucky beat us on the Petrino hire in a landslide (even if they lost him to the 'Ville one season later). Wonder if they have any regrets? They got a heck've deal hiring Bobby (read the out clause). Now, we try to maintain a holier than thou attitude and the best honest to goodness coach on the market is swooped up by Auburn and we're wondering who we're going to hire next.

Heck, might as well hire Seth Greenberg back. We may have been average, but we knew what we were getting game in and game out. Funny how both of Seth's predecessors have been canned after he left (makes you wonder if Seth was undervalued by the university - I know most USF fans hate him - now come with the pizza comments). Either way, Stan gave us a nice run for one season, but even I thought he would bring more to the table after his prior coaching stints. Shows what I know.

Want to see a university languish away in never never land and lose to schools like UCF... look below at who we didn't hire for who we did hire (and I'm hoping to God Taggart does something sooner than later).

And who's to say Petrino wouldn't have been gone after a year here? That's his M.O.: Leave as soon as something better comes up. Louisville waved a 7-year/$24.5 million contract in front of his face to work at a P5 program on the rise. We very well might be conducting two HC searches at this juncture. Heck, if that had happened and CWT stayed at WKU for the 2013 season, we might have hired him to replace Petrino.

I would guess that DW has absolutely ZERO to do with who the next coach is. I would also guess that the pocket change we could offer Pearl wasn't all that enticing compared to any SEC job.
