Hopefully after next season we can process out most of the D players who can't cut it this season. These guys are on their 3rd DC, so if they still stink it ain't the coaching staff.

Yes! Going to be a fun season no matter what as the coaches will be putting more pieces into place

This needs to be a victory!

Hmmm. I’m hoping for one,but being realistic. A new coaching staff, with mostly new players, last years worst defense vs an offense returning most of a 30+ ppg , on the road in game 1. Might be a lot to ask.

Currently we are 14 points underdogs.

I do predict that this board will probably be in meltdown mode after the WKU game lol. USF will be fine so I’m not worried lol

We have 12 P5 and 2 G6 transfers (who played a lot) on our defense. I feel our defense is going to be waaaaaay better this year. We finally have multiple 300Ib DTs and may get 1 more before it's all said and done.

DE -

  • Vaughn, Jason JR - 8.5 tackles for loss (-34 yards) and five sacks (-24 yards) last year
  • Jonathan Ross (Bowie State) - 3.0 tackles for loss, two sacks, and 1 quarterback hurry last year
  • Logan, Tramel SO -5.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks & 2 quarterback hurries last year
  • Derrick Harris Jr. (Texas)
  • Immanuel Hickman (ECU)
  • Lloyd Summerall (UF)
  • Rico Watson (FSU as a walk-on/Robert Morris) - At Robert Morris, he played in 11 games and had 42  tackles, 10.5 (-42) TFLs and 5(-29 ) sacks, 1  forced fumble,  1   Interception, and 1 pass deflected.

DT –

  • Rashad Cheney Jr. (Minn)
  • Doug Blue-Eli (TCU) - 320 Ibs
  • Bernard Gooden (Wake)
  • Jhalin Hobbs - 308 Ibs
  • Jacquez Williams - 308 Ibs
  • De'Juan Sease (Allen Univ)

LB –

  • Jamie Pettway (FAU)
  • Andrew Mataafa (Utah)
  • DJ Gordon IV (Minn)
  • Norris, Brian RS JR
  • Mac Harris

Secondary –

  • Aamaris Brown (Kansas State)
  • Williams, Christian SO/TR (Miami)
  • Jameel Sanders (JUCO)
  • Timarcus "T-Mac" Simpson (Eastern Mich)
  • Robinson, TJ RS SO/TR (Rutgers)
  • Hill, Matthew RS SO/TR (Auburn)
  • Kendall Dennis (OU)
  • Braxton Clark (Nebraska)

Amazing how much better in makes me feel when you BOLD a name.

Last few DC along with Scott's calm demeanor on sideline was a disaster for defensive energy.

Players definitely feed off that energy on sidelines and Golesh and Orlando are probably big improvements on that alone add in better coaching and more talent and I wouldn't be shocked if defense ended ranked around 80s.

I am more worried about receiving group...that's a big question mark on this team I believe.

We do this every year.  Start off with realistic expectations and then suddenly half-way thru the off-season, we're going to be world-beaters again.  All these new players haven't played a real game together yet.  I hope we turn things around, but I won't be losing my mind if it doesn't happen this season.

Great thread and analysis.

Kevin Patrick alone will change the dynamic.

It's been said a lot the defense needs to compliment the offense. What does that mean? To me its:

Focus on turnovers - put the ball back into the offense hands, obvious

Bend don't break? Let the offense rest, stay on the field, tighten up in the red zone to keep them to 0 or 3

Anything else?

Correction, The original poster does this every year, we aren’t any good on the field but **** he makes us look like world beaters on paper.  He knows the roster better than anyone on the board however he has a tendency to look at these guys with some very thick rose colored glasses, take his analysis with a grain of salt and a fifth of Tito’s, it makes more sense that way.

That's what's awesome.  We don't get this level or detailed analysis until some random article comes out on a blog later.  It's much appreciated.

The things I would do to have a nasty, hard hitting, aggressive defense again. Points are all the rage these days for people but I just freaking love an old school defensive slugfest. Fun defense is greater than a fun offense to me. Gimme 24-14 over 48-35 all day, everyday
