The question was about independence.  Had we had visionaries at the helm independence should have been a consideration.  We didn't, so the point is moot.  As for today, we're worse off than we were and independence is out of the question, we can agree on that.  Additionally, "no other choice" is often easier to accept (and to remove responsibility) than a choice or the requirement to create your choices.  We have only limited our choices since our days of success.

The only options  left is to win or embrace the suck.

I predicted that independence was a stone cold lock.  Oops.

My bad, there were other choices, such as going indy or shutting down Athletics. Independence would have only been a consideration for a nanosecond so who knows for sure if there wasn't.... Considering the branded programs that weren't chosen by a P5 from the BE, with most everything better off than our program, didn't go Independent at that point kinda tells you everything you need to know.

Someone on here is pushing that option a lot.  I suppose that means all the alumni can get together for random flash mobs instead.

Or talk about our being a victim of a cruel, choiceless psuedo-NCAA.

You'd get about as many people attending.

Like if we really hit the FL, GA, southeast region hard in terms of scheduling, that could only help with exposure in recruiting.

Which makes the grand assumption that schools WANT TO put USF on the schedule. Not a guarantee. As for recruiting, getting your arse waxed by P5 schools across the southeastern section of the nation, exactly how does that help USF with recruiting? The best USF can hope for, at this point and for the foreseeable future, is to position itself for the throw-the-dog-a-bone sixth slot in the annual playoff scenario.  Which means winning a lot of games. Not just one or two. 'Cause there's gonna be a line of all those other schools vying for that spot. Independence works if you're school is spelled Notre Dame. Otherwise, not so much. College football in the early twenty-first century is all about who you're seen with, hence the relentless pining for inclusion somewhere other than here.

It fits in with the slowly spiraling world.  The NCAA reflects the general vibe of everything.

No bowl invites, no baseball or men’s basketball NCAA invites, so no change really.

In answer to the OP, it is basically impossible to be an independent in olympic sports. I've never heard of a team in D1 doing that, but I could be wrong.
