Do the student's have to pay to get into any of the games (e.g. football, basketball, baseball, etc.)?

No.. it's all covered by the fees.

They can attend any home game of any sport for free.

...And use of the Bull Runner to go to the games.. and now discounted parking.. and other perks.

Why should they be paying if they have no interest in sports, or are unable to attend (IE: They are working to pay their tuition and FEES) those events?

Why should I have to pay a public school fee (tax)? I don't have a child in public school? Or my homeowners association dues, I don't use the facilities...

completely different situation.

taxes and fees are not the same.

Having an educated population is advantageous to a developed nation. In contrast, having college sports (poor product on field, paying previous coaches making money elsewhere) funded by the student population is rediculuous.

How is that different? I choose to live where I live, a student CHOOSES to go to USF. If either one of us doesn't like the situation, Thank God, we have the right to change it.

We all have the right, but not all have the means to do so.

That's what scholarships and community colleges are for ...

So where can a student get a BS in Engineering in the Tampa while living at home?

Florida Polytechnic University

beat me to it

I am fine with the student fees as long as:

  • The students are offered something tangible in return - in this case there is free admission to facilities and sporting events (whether or not you use it is irrelevant. I never stepped foot in the library when i went to college but I am sure some of my tuition went towards it)
  • The fees make up a small percentage of the total tuition costs - if the $250 number quoted earlier is directionally accurate that plays out roughly $30 per semester

I recently went on a business trip to India - now those people have rough lives and have something to gripe about. Trust me they aren't whining about student fees. They were more concerned about clean water, disease, poverty, and for the women its far worse. I will never complain about paying taxes again, let alone student fees.

I can somewhat agree with you...

but because one place is less effecient, does not make our ineffeciency a good thing.

If you go to top Universities in developed nations, how much of your student fees go towards paying subpar coaches that are working elsewhere?

So you prefer that we had kept coaches that weren't winning because they were paid for?

College is a privilege, not a right

If the student is not happy, I hear the Univ of Phoenix has low athletic fees

Not too bad...but I hope Genshaft has at least considered other forms of income rather than just immediately shifting this extra burden onto the students again.

Better this way than making them pay separately to go to the games. Maybe more will go if they figure they're already paying for it ....

Actual attendance says otherwise!

Can you fathom what it would be like if they had to pay extra???

All the more reason they shouldn't be subsidizing the AD's budget!   I'd should be their choice to buy or not buy tickets.

If they want that choice, and an engineering degree, they should transfer to Florida Polytech ...

WTF?

It IS their choice. They made that choice at the time they enrolled. If they didn't read the fine print, shame on them.

If you want to get what you pay for go to McDonald's, otherwise zip it.

I call bull scheit on that.

Well when you see a 5 year old crap in the street or watch a guys 8x8 brick house collapse on itself, you realize how important infrastructure is and government's role in providing the basics to its people. Trust me it changed my perception on alot of things.

I've lived among the people in places like that, or worse, that doesn't change my view of taxes in our country.  Student's paying 36% of the cost of intercollegiate athletics...is WRONG!!!

"According to its filings with the NCAA, USF Athletics relies on a $15.2 million subsidy from students: fees paid in addition to tuition.

Each student pays $14.15 per credit hour plus $10 per term for varsity athletics. That's an average of roughly $444 per year or $1,776 for four years. It's greater than the $1,410 students pay for all on-campus activities and services and the $1,168 they pay for campus health care.

The $15.2 million student subsidy makes up 36 percent of the athletic department's budget, more than any other school in the six major power conferences."

 2011 season

And you consented to it. Congrats.
