In 2011, ESPN offered a new nine-year deal to the Big East worth $1.17 billion or an average of $130 million annually. However, the Big East's presidents voted to turn down the deal that would have earned football members nearly $14 million a year

 

Isn't this pretty much a moot point considering the 16 teams leaving the conference since it was offered? The contract would have been torn up, wouldn't it?

Yes and No. Surely, that $1.17 billion deal would have included clauses allowing ESPN to reduce its payment if teams left, just as it would have included clauses for increased payments if new teams were added. But, there is only a limited amount of leeway involved. These modification clauses would not have allowed radical changes, so the reduction in payments that ESPN could have gotten with all those teams bailing out would still mean they would be paying us FAR more than they will under the terms of the contract ratified today.

At a certain point the contract would become void.

 

Yes, but there is a bigger factor.  With that contract in place, teams would not have wanted to bolt so quickly, and it would have been easier to get quality replacements.  Pitt and Syracuse might have bolted to the ACC, or they might have stayed.  The money difference would have been minimal, and without getting a big bump in money and stability they would have been jumping to a potentially weaker conference.  The B1G would have still taken Rutgers, and there is a good chance that WVU would have still gone to the Big 12.  But that might have been all, and you replace those guys with SMU and Houston and you are still in pretty good shape.  In a perfect world, the contract would have allowed the Big East to add TCU and maybe Boise and SDSU on the football side while losing only Rutgers.  That would have been a superior conference than the ACC in football and basketball.

 

But we'll never know because Pitt torpedo'd the BE since they was already flirting with the ACC.

You could blame the Pac 12 as much as Pitt. It was their big contract that had Big East schools dreaming.

The same price? And they took ESPN when they would be featured on NBC? I wonder how many USF games will actually be on TV vs the internet compared to if they went with NBC. What about a counter offer from NBC?

Where does everyone get te idea that every Big East game will be

regulated online to ESPN3? Nothing being reported suggests that.

My points are that there is no indication that we will not have other

than Thursday night games, and why is Foxsports1 be any better than

NBCSports? I'm seriously not trying to argue, I just don't think that

it's a better deal as it stands now, "knowing" what we know.

Well...f*ck. Let's hope they matched the exposure like the one source is quoted saying.

Other than that...hope Aresco is looking to sell the BE name to the C7 for BIG BUCKS that we will get a piece of...maybe we can sell some naming rights to the Sun Dome as well...

In the end, what I'm praying for is continued expansion with a way into the ACC at worst.
