Too bad Kingston didn't stick around longer. Mohl was an assistant under him.

Any baseball eggheads can explain if Mohl just hasn't recruited or coached as well as his predecessor?

Chatfield never really developed after being 23rd round draft pick out of HS. He played his last two years under Mohl. Schrempf was pretty highly touted and he transferred. Zech was a 15th round pick out of HS who played his last two years under Mohl as well and never blossomed. DJ Roberts was drafted out of HS, played a year under Kingston, then transferred. Those are big ones I can think of  off the top of my head. Probably a little too early to say how guys who've been recruited specifically by Mohl has grown. But his first class should be paying dividends right now as upper classmen. Kingston's coaching skills pretty much speak for themselves. He took a team that missed the NCAA tourney in 2017 at South Carolina to a Super Regional his first year and he had four straight 30 win teams at Illinois State and they hadn't finished above .500 in the decade before he took over.

Kingston Perfect Game rankings 2015-2017: 3, 40, 86

Mohl Perfect Game rankings 2018-2020: 47, 70, 41

Kingston has been a fail at USC. Big difference is Mohl is a pitching guy while Kingston is/was an offensive guy. Kingston had a Billy Mohl to help with the pitching side of things while Mohl has struggled to find a guy to help with that offensive side of things.   Jury is out on whether Mohl has what it takes to succeed as a HC.

A fail? I don't know if I'd go that far. Season 1 was a Super Regional and Season 2 was .500. Season 3 they were 12-4 and getting votes. Season 4 they're in the preseason top 25. Mohl definitely needs to find an offensive guy. Our hitting was abysmal in a short sowing last year against some good, but a lot of not so good competition. We've got to be able to score runs against some of those teams we saw last year. 11 runs against Marist in 3 games? 5 runs in 3 games against Northeastern, with back to back shutouts in a doubleheader? Woof.
