Matt Grothe had a four star RB Mike Ford ...

Mack surpassed Ford during the Syracuse game if I'm not mistaken.

In the beginning of a program any and everyone looks good in comparison to nothing. There will be a time where even Mr. Grothe will belong to the history books. I would hope all bulls fans would want that to be sooner rather than later.

Mack surpassed Ford during the Syracuse game if I'm not mistaken.

It wouldn't surprise me... there again... two different systems.  One system is based on the RBs being able to run and the QB bing mobile enough to extend plays and make runs.  The other, offense under Grothe, relied less on the RBs and more on the WRs making plays and the QB still being mobile enough to extend plays (but under Grothe the offense was predicated on him being able to do this to pass the ball).

Mike Ford didn't get the touches Mack does now because he was in a different offense.  But no one would argue the guy was not an incredible talent.  He was just stupid and stayed in the doghouse... and then got kicked off the team.... for weed.

But I think at the end of the season comparing Flowers to any QB that played at USF is a legit comparison.  I mean I argue with the guys here about stats and completion percentage not being the best indicator.  But sometimes I like everyone else want to see good stats from a guy.  I actually get Hornz and all of those guys.  I know why they think what they do... it's natural because we've sucked for a really really long time and it literally  shows up in the stats over there past 5 years.  But I honestly don't think you can compare Flowers to anyone until they year is out... then it's an open book because we would have seen how he accumulated the stats as a basis for evaluating them.

I'm just glad the stats are a lot better than they were the last 4 years.  That's the last thing I'll say about  comparing anything

At least that steered the conversation away from that nonsense that we'd be 5-1 or 6-0 this year with that stiff from UConn qbing us ...

Now THAT was a good one.

Rewatched the game today and decided to jot down QFs passing attempts.  Did not realize we only threw the ball 3 times in the 2nd half.

Down & Distance - Whether pass was downfield or behind LOS - How far beyond/behind LOS - Comp or Incomplete - Result of play

3rd & 10 - Downfield 30 yds - Inc - Overthrown

1st & 10 - Downfield 45 yds - Inc - Overthrown

3rd & 9 - Behind LOS 3 yds - Comp - 3 yd Loss

2nd & 9 - Behind LOS 5 yds - Comp - 4 yd Gain

3rd & 5 - Behind LOS 7 yds - Comp - 5 yd Loss

1st & 10 - Behind LOS 5 yds - Comp - 4 yd Gain

2nd & 6 - Touch pass/handoff - Comp - 8 yd Gain

1st & 10 - Downfield 1 yd - Comp - No gain

3rd & 7 - Downfield 5 yds - Comp - 44 yd TD

3rd & 5 - Downfield 5 yds - INT

1st & 10 - Downfield 25 yds - Comp - 28 yd Gain

1st & 10 - Behind LOS 3 yds - Comp - 5 yd Gain

2nd & 5 - Behind LOS 3 yds - Comp - 2 yd Loss

2nd Half

2nd & 9 - Downfield 21 yds - INT

1st & 10 - Downfield 19 yds - Comp - 30 yd Gain

1st & 10 - Downfield 30 yds - Comp - 44 yd TD

Interesting that there are hardly any intermediate throws between 10 & 20.  There was 1 of 19 yds.  So it seems we are throwing very short or fairly deep.  Counting the 19 yarder he attempted 6 passes of that length or more.  Missed the 1st two, threw one pick and completed the other 3 with 1 going for a TD.  It seems that the play action worked well even though I didn't note that I'm pretty sure at least 2 of those long completions came on play action.

We need to use the play action more on 1st down.

Completely  messes up defense since EVERYONE  is expecting us to run on 1st down.

Except the only way you fool 'em is if you run on nearly every first down...

Ronnie Banks or Quinton Flowers, who had the better first year as a starter?

Man... Who really cares. Grothe was Grothe and Flowers is Flowers.

As long as Flowers continues to grow and as a QB I'll be happy

Come on man...QF will continue to blossom!

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
