so if he is declared the 3rd QB he can still play on special teams? i thought once that 3rd QB comes in the game the 1st string QB cant play again.

1st and second string qb cant play if you bring in the emergency QB

they may be referring to using this for backup kicking specialists-- not sure

either way, I don't see BJ needing to worry about how much playing time he gets in the first year

They can be holders. That's why the special teams. Not sure if that would apply if they wanted to stick him in as a returner. Probably hasn't come up since they changed that rule.

The Third Quarterback can only play kicker, punter or holder, along with qb, after playing his first play as a qb only ...

Also, the 3rd QB can enter the game but that means the first 2 cannot play again until the 4th quarter

If the Third Quarterback comes in during the first three periods, the other two are ineligible for the rest of the game. If he enters in th fourth period or later, the other two could come back in.

What BJ's flexibility may allow the 49ers to do is not have a Third Quarterback. They could have him on the 45 man game day roster as an emergency rb, wr, or qb.

Triple B, it's the head coaches job to hire a QB coach who actually knows how to IMPROVE your QBs as well as hiring the staff to design an offense that MAXIMIZES your qb's ability.  It didn't take a genius to see that BJs strength was his elusiveness and cannon arm where he was much more accurate on longer throws than he was on anything short where timing and touch were key.

Yet what did they do to the kid when Holtz came in?  The majority of the plays had him in the pocket and throwing short routes!  Everything he's NOT.  Have you watched him play for SF yet?  They are rolling him out and the majority of the passes are either DEEP or WIDE.  Hardly anything which requires him to stand in the pocket and then try to throw a 3-5 yard route.

Rarely does a QB making the jump to the NFL look BETTER than he did in college this quickly.  It's not that BJ is that much better now than he was at USF, he's just with a coach who knows how to put a system around him to utilize his talents.

Honestly, it would be great to magically have all his plays from his years here and then the 49ers preseason available at the touch of a button. I guess people want to remember things how they want, and that includes me. I don't recall BJ throwing what I would call a deep ball but once or twice with the 9ers. He had a lot of slants and outs, with a couple of nice corner end zone fades for TD's ... now THAT was something that should have been tried more here. Just not sure how people can just totally ignore his 10,000 total yards here and act like what he's doing in SF is some kind of miracle transformation. This is just one of those things where people see what they want to see and we'll have to agree to disagree ... Just picked your post to respond to because it was kind of like the last straw.

Amazing all the NFL-caliber players Leavitt brought to USF.

Not only did Holtz waste all the talent he inherited, he also failed to recruit top level players and couldn't get a quality QB.

First rule of TBP: Holtz never did anything good.

I am just amazed BJ is able to throw and complete slant routes. I was told many times that it wasn't in the play book because BJ wasn't able to throw one nor was he able to see it develop because of his height. Now he is making swiss cheese of blitzes

Could it have been that choltz was really conservative with BJ because was scared of him getting hurt because he had no confidence in the backups?

I agree with Trip. It was the other way around. You can see that in 2009 with BJ (and previous with Matt G). I think it was just a difference of philosophy. We didn't really attack the middle of the field, which in college should be a focal point. I think it will be something we see moving forward, using quick hit routes with big TEs.

While it was something I had a huge gripe with the old coach, you could see that most teams we played stacked the box or played the edges of the box, forcing us outside on one on one coverages.

Not to change the subject too much but I am sure that you have seen the self proclaimed talent expert on here (megalomaniac) flat out said that BJ could NEVER be an NFL QB.  I have no problem with one expressing doubt since there were some weaknesses in his game but to flat out deny his strong arm, elusiveness, and his heart is an abomination. Why root against one of your own?  True experts do not have to tell everyone about their greatness because it is a given.  Pseudo-experts are the one who have to pound their drum.

Couldn't have happened to a more hardworking and deserving kid. Always a class act Bull and he's doing us proud at the next level against all odds. Just fantastic.
