so if he is declared the 3rd QB he can still play on special teams? i thought once that 3rd QB comes in the game the 1st string QB cant play again.

1st and second string qb cant play if you bring in the emergency QB

they may be referring to using this for backup kicking specialists-- not sure

either way, I don't see BJ needing to worry about how much playing time he gets in the first year

They can be holders. That's why the special teams. Not sure if that would apply if they wanted to stick him in as a returner. Probably hasn't come up since they changed that rule.

The Third Quarterback can only play kicker, punter or holder, along with qb, after playing his first play as a qb only ...

Also, the 3rd QB can enter the game but that means the first 2 cannot play again until the 4th quarter

If the Third Quarterback comes in during the first three periods, the other two are ineligible for the rest of the game. If he enters in th fourth period or later, the other two could come back in.

What BJ's flexibility may allow the 49ers to do is not have a Third Quarterback. They could have him on the 45 man game day roster as an emergency rb, wr, or qb.

This rule changed a couple of years ago.

Dang, the link I had had an official NFL logo and everything ... I should have done a little more looking ... even Wikipedia has it correct.

I think all of this Holtz stuff should be moved to another thread.  BJ deserves a positive thread on this board after the way we treated him in his last three years.

Good point. I'll set up a thread in the General Sports forum do dump all this Holtz whining into from now on.

Oh, and to add to the Holtz discussion I think that whole **** family is in bed with ESPN and he was a plant here to ruin this football program.

Not so good point.

Interesting idea though as to which they'll list as 3rd QB. Daniels being active still gives them that emergency option at other positions as well.

Probably will stick with McCoy early, but BJ will at least be dressed either way.

he will only dress as the emergency qb for the most part- which is part of the 53 man roster but not the active roster unless both QBs go down

He may dress because he can be used in other roles.

Looks like he can dress under two circumstances. As part of the 45 game day roster, where he could be used anywhere .... or as a designated 3rd qb from the inactive roster, where he can only be used as a qb and special teams ... Here's the NFL rule:

The rule was very helpful. Thanks for that.

Under the inactive QB role, he could play on special teams only as kicker, punter, or holder.

And now I learn that that isn't even the rule any more. So, assuming BJD makes the 53-man roster, then the question is whether he'll be active for games within the 46-man game-day roster. Depends, I guess, on how lucky Harbaugh feels or on whether he thinks BJD can really contribute in a role other than QB.

It looks as if he will make the roster after the final cut.  It is stated that the cut have to be made by 4pm, but is that 4 pm EST or PST?

Regardless, it is nice to see him get a chance to realize his dream.  He gave his heart and soul to USF during his tenure.

See below:

"The conclusion from the 49ers 41-6 win over the Chargers? The 49ers’ depth is ridiculous. Whether it is Cam Johnson as a fifth pass rusher or Michael Thomas as a third nickel back, or Nate Stupar as a fifth inside linebacker, Lavelle Hawkins as a sixth receiver, this team is stacked. When the 49ers do make their final cuts, the 49ers might set a record for most players claimed. The Raiders alone could grab several 49ers.
It could lead to some surprises at the final cut down. For example, how about Hawkins instead of Jon Baldwin at receiver?

Also, is it just a matter of time before B.J. Daniels overtakes Colt McCoy as the second quarterback? Daniels was again impressive; in only a few drives, Daniels out produced McCoy. Daniels finished 5-for-9 for 76 yards and two touchdowns, while McCoy completed 8 of 15 passes for 56 yards and a score. Daniels also raced for 54 yards on 6 carries. Daniels’ total lead the team in passing and rushing. "

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
