First rule of TBP: Holtz never did anything good.

Holtz was good about 3/12ths of the time.

Could it have been that choltz was really conservative with BJ because was scared of him getting hurt because he had no confidence in the backups?

Holtz had a difficult time showing confidence in BJ. he coached afraid much of the time. temple game last year instead of confidently marching down the field, killing clock and then either scoring a TD or kicking game winner with 00 on the clock he essentially ran 3 times into the line and lined up for a 40+ YARD fg with over 1:30 left on the clock and a gassed defense that hadn't been able to close out a game all year. I believe he did something simiklar against ball state.

Triple B, it's the head coaches job to hire a QB coach who actually knows how to IMPROVE your QBs as well as hiring the staff to design an offense that MAXIMIZES your qb's ability.  It didn't take a genius to see that BJs strength was his elusiveness and cannon arm where he was much more accurate on longer throws than he was on anything short where timing and touch were key.

Yet what did they do to the kid when Holtz came in?  The majority of the plays had him in the pocket and throwing short routes!  Everything he's NOT.  Have you watched him play for SF yet?  They are rolling him out and the majority of the passes are either DEEP or WIDE.  Hardly anything which requires him to stand in the pocket and then try to throw a 3-5 yard route.

Rarely does a QB making the jump to the NFL look BETTER than he did in college this quickly.  It's not that BJ is that much better now than he was at USF, he's just with a coach who knows how to put a system around him to utilize his talents.

Honestly, it would be great to magically have all his plays from his years here and then the 49ers preseason available at the touch of a button. I guess people want to remember things how they want, and that includes me. I don't recall BJ throwing what I would call a deep ball but once or twice with the 9ers. He had a lot of slants and outs, with a couple of nice corner end zone fades for TD's ... now THAT was something that should have been tried more here. Just not sure how people can just totally ignore his 10,000 total yards here and act like what he's doing in SF is some kind of miracle transformation. This is just one of those things where people see what they want to see and we'll have to agree to disagree ... Just picked your post to respond to because it was kind of like the last straw.

it wasn't the offense with Holtz as it was the defense. a defense that had talent. one senior corner drafted another invited to an NFL camp and we are **** near last in pass defense. I did hate the dink and dunk we would see with Holtz. he nearly got hopkins killed a couple of times on routes that were near the line of scrimmage. they were difficult throws with very little upside and i didn't feel like the offense played into BJs strenghts as much as it could but it wasn't the offense that got him canned.

essentially, he didn't play to win, but rather he played not to lose

I think all of this Holtz stuff should be moved to another thread.  BJ deserves a positive thread on this board after the way we treated him in his last three years.

Oh, and to add to the Holtz discussion I think that whole **** family is in bed with ESPN and he was a plant here to ruin this football program.  Sounds extreme, but I have no doubt that some of us blowhards on this board could have had similar or better results.  No excuse that guy had to be trying to suck like he did.

Now, go BJ and if you get your chance in the season, play like you did this preseason and you will be taking snaps somewhere next season!

Trip it's not about ignoring the excellent things BJ did here, it's about how much better he could have been. He looks like a boss on the slant routes, I don't remember running one of those. He never had a hot route. I remember multiple home games yelling where the blitz was coming and that he needed to get it out quick only to see him sacked or hit or running for his life after his drop back. I really thought he was just limited physically or mentally as a QB.

The fact he's done things after a few months with NFL coaching he didn't learn in 5 years here, that tells me there was a terrible lack of coaching.

Whether we all agree or not, he was an accomplished and successful college QB which I know is your point. But with any coaching near what he received over this offseason, he might have been a superstar.

so if he is declared the 3rd QB he can still play on special teams? i thought once that 3rd QB comes in the game the 1st string QB cant play again.

1st and second string qb cant play if you bring in the emergency QB

they may be referring to using this for backup kicking specialists-- not sure

either way, I don't see BJ needing to worry about how much playing time he gets in the first year

They can be holders. That's why the special teams. Not sure if that would apply if they wanted to stick him in as a returner. Probably hasn't come up since they changed that rule.

The Third Quarterback can only play kicker, punter or holder, along with qb, after playing his first play as a qb only ...

Also, the 3rd QB can enter the game but that means the first 2 cannot play again until the 4th quarter

If the Third Quarterback comes in during the first three periods, the other two are ineligible for the rest of the game. If he enters in th fourth period or later, the other two could come back in.

What BJ's flexibility may allow the 49ers to do is not have a Third Quarterback. They could have him on the 45 man game day roster as an emergency rb, wr, or qb.

This rule changed a couple of years ago.

That's what I imagine they'd do.  You have to add returner.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”
