I guess my real opinion on this is:

Our situation is an absolute dumpster fire and we are like abused spouses cheering on our players for transferring out.  WTF - This is our nightmare now.  Anyway, there is a tremendous amount of pressure and a lot of stakes riding on his future career (and MK).  I am sure he hired people who he knows and trusts.  This is what people do.  That being said, the people he was exposed to in coaching were mostly of a certain skinsuit shade because the disparity already exists (which is how this perpetuates).  Yes the percentages don't make sense compared to the playing population.  Yes it needs to be better.  The OP is right that the same percentage of any group of players would make good coaches but they aren't getting the exposure.  The flaw is probably getting new coaches through the initial pipeline (analyst to position coach, etc.).  Everyone will eventually sink or swim as long as they are given the opportunity.

I suspect coach's blue collar mentality was just that he got some guys that he knows and things will grind it out and do what it takes.  He really seems like he cares about the players to me.  He comes across as empathetic and real to me.  Maybe when he learns the political metagame of coaching you might see this change over the years if he can gain some real clout and makes more and more personal connections.

In the end we HAVE to start winning like now and momentum is not on our side.   A lot of money and the future of the PROGRUM is on the line.  This is the guy we hired so we have to roll with it and hope the results start coming...

So you’re saying that white coaches are just more qualified? How else do you explain the drastic differences in %s?

I'm an engineer.  I went to graduate school at a premier engineering school in Cleveland, Ohio for graduate school.  I was a massive minority and most of the students were Asian.  Is that because Asian's make better engineers?  No, not necessarily.  A lot of it is cultural and how many people of various cultures and races want to be graduate students in engineering school.  The issues for why there aren't more black coaches I'm sure are wide and varied.  I just don't believe it is racism because in college sports, especially football, it is so important to win or coaches and AD's lose their jobs.  I truly don't believe people care and they shouldn't.  I think over time as black coaches are more successful the numbers will grow.  I do believe that is a good thing but at any given point in time I don't believe hiring coaches should have anything to do with race or skin color.  I truly don't care.  Just win baby.  Go Bulls.

I really appreciate the open dialogue and civil conversation. I guess the part that I have a hard time with, would be correcting wrongdoings or fixing a problem that I had no hand in creating. It's almost like I should feel guilty for what previous white men have done in society when most of us are so far removed from what has happened to various ethnic groups in the past. Although I grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood, my family was not immune to many of the problems within society today, divorce, drug abuse, financial distress, etc. I lost my brother to drug abuse. I'm of the standpoint that we need to let bygones be bygones and move forward and stop looking in the past. We're all human beings and moving forward is the only true path to progress.

I personally don't want anyone to feel guilty unless they are still actively hurting others. We have been and will always be in the same boat and I'm sorry for your loss.  Only issue is when someone is already at a systemic disadvantage, they go through all of the societal problems, in addition to the systemic issues heaped on them.

I think acknowledging wrongdoings go a long way in healing hurt. I don't want anything from individuals who have done nothing to me or mine. The nation on the other hand is a different story, but that is also a deeper conversation not suitable for a sports forum.

I also would advise caution with letting bygones be bygones without any restorative practices. Hypothetically, if my great grandfather stole your family's farm. Took all profits for me and mine. Then not only did we not share any of the generational wealth or resources, we act as if we never took your family farm.

Then a few generations from even then we simply say just let it go.

Stunning, we have 3/4 more announcements expected and this thread already died. Narrative gone rather swiftly, more so with a couple of the next guys being reported. Welcome coach Birkett and the next few unannounced publicly!!! Let's get to work!!

Wehired d a solid db coach, but I am still concerned about the coaches with no experience being coaches.  Hopefully this works out.

This article in the Times today opened my eyes some to the fact that there's still a lot of racism involving some facets of sports out there that many of us just aren't familiar with. Having said that though, this thread was still ******** in trying to make something out of nothing, made even more ludicrous by the fact the staff wasn't even completed yet. At this level, $ and winning are what matters the most and who can best help achieve that is the driving force, Not oblivious to the probability of there still being racism at the collegiate level somewhere but trying to bring it into play here, in any way, was totally unwarranted ...

I won’t battle you on racism in college sports, if it can be easily found in high school it can be easily found in college (I don’t think we have to go back that far to blatantly see it). That article was pretty interesting and to me highlights where we are today and have been in certain areas. Individuals aren’t just racist at birth, they learn these behaviors from someone.  Before someone (yes, I know this forum) calls me out, I’m talking about the article and not the original post.

Today, though ? No question there has been historically but is there that much still currently out there ...
