Not the best DC, but I'd expect with a pitch like that, it'd be a DC that's above our weight class. A Brian Jean-Mary or Tom Allen type. Todd Orlando's numbers are around where Chris Cosh's were when we hired him:

Chris Cosh: 27.9 pts, 394.6 yds

Todd Orlando: 26.6 pts, 424.8 yds

Oh no…

Our problem did seem to be talent on that side of the ball more so than scheme. Could see valuing recruiting in a DC being a thing for a guy that watched tape on our team

He's going to be fine. As has been pointed out, we should be good if we only allow 30 ppg.

Golesh wasn’t lying when he said we’re going to be aggressive. Idk that Orlando is the best DC in the country, but he’s **** sure going to be an upgrade

I died every time we got to third down and 5+ and watch our DBs playing 10 yds off the receiver

And if on offense, they can get the pieces for the system, I think the goal is scoring more than 30 a game.  I'm fine with high scoring nail-biters....Oh, I yearn for the good ole days of competitive football.

You have to put it into context. Utah State to Houston was a big step up. Houston to Texas was him following Herman. USC....I'm not sure why, maybe money, but then they had a coaching change as well in 2021, which led him to FAU in 2022. It isn't like this guy is getting fired from his gigs.

EDIT: Apparently Herman fired him from Texas.

Who else was he gonna fire himself? Herman needed a scapegoat.

Look at all his years and where he has been. For you or anyone to compare him to those guys is laughable.

Since when does "where he has been" matter? Our last coach was from Clemson and the one before was from Texas, Florida, and Louisville. Where did that get us?

Here's Todd Orlando's past five years and where his defense ranked nationally and Chris Cosh's last five years before we hired him:

Todd Orlando: FAU (66), USC (103), USC (46), Texas (65), Texas (58)
Average: 68

Chris Cosh: Kansas State (68), Kansas State (78), Kansas State (46), Maryland (44), Maryland (24)
Average: 52

You're right, it's laughable to compare because Cosh's defense averaged in the top half of FBS and Orlando's in the bottom half. Look, I'm not saying that Orlando isn't an upgrade from Shoop, but it's disingenuous for him to say he hired the best DC in the country. It smells of the same cluelessness that we suffered through CJS or CCS when he said he was going to slow the offense down, Sterlin Gilbert when he said he didn't watch any film from the prior year, CWT when he tried to force his Stanford offense here, etc. It's going to come back to bite him in the ass  and turn into message board fodder when we see guys missing tackles, playing 10 yards off the receiver, getting burnt deep, etc. again this year.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
