So mildly improbable?

Was there an explanation to go along with that? If there is, and it's defensively oriented, I can buy it a bit. If it's the GB factor, not feeling it yet.

ESPN has a brief explanation for the proprietary FPI and what goes into the calculations. My explanation is that, on paper, we are better and deeper at every single position on the field than we were last season. We have a lot of talent in a lot of key areas. At the skill positions, we are more talented and deeper than BYU. They have the edge on defense and coaching. If reports out of camp are that Gerry is the real deal, I wouldn't be surprised to see the betting line move down to USF +10.

Yep you win the downer award. Secondary will not be the same personnel this year. BULLS win.

The biggest  factor this year if we can get some pressure on the qb and attack their running attack  with the dline and linebackers.  We need to get back to getting after their qb and rbs behind the line of scrimmage. Take away the long ball with pressure on the qb.

A nice discussion of the game with Will Turner with BYU's 247 rep:

We all know the defense was not great last year. I looked up some stats just now from last year:

1) Opponents converted 39.6% or their 3rd down plays

2) Opponents converted 63.64% of their 4th down plays.

3) We allowed 206 rushing yards per game for a 5.8 average per attempt. (YIKES)

4) We allowed 263.3 passing yards per game for a 8.3 average per attempt. (DOUBLE YIKES)

5) Overall we allowed 470 yards per game with 7 yards per play average.

6) We only had 9 sacks on the season

7) We allowed opponents to convert 63% of red zone possessions into TDs.

Now I know we've added depth, but those underperforming players are still out there for us. I won't hold my breath that a coaching and philosophy change will somehow spark a dramatic turnaround defensively.

I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong though.

EDIT: Let's also not forget that BYU's QB Jaren Hall was out against us last year and he is much more dynamic than their backup that scorched us.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
