If we defeat BYU then I fully expect the excitement to gear up for USF. The national perception, however, (whether it is true or not) will probably go like this, "Nice win for Jeff Scott and team. Maybe they actually have something going down there in Tampa, but obviously BYU was just overrated." My personal perception will be, "BYU will go undefeated the rest of the year, and USF will win the AAC and a big bowl game followed by an immediate invitation to both the B12 and ACC." Yeah, I always have on my green and gold goggles. 😏🤘

Last year against BYU we played poorly in the first quarter, outplayed them the rest of the game, and had a chance to take the lead in the 3rd quarter before fading down the stretch. That was at altitude (4,333 feet or a little more than 4/5 of a mile). In the Florida heat (especially the humidity) I think conditioning will make a significant difference. Add in better talent, more depth, and better assistant coaches and USF has a very good chance of winning that game. I think this game goes down to the wire with USF being able to eke out the win.

Wow! Gotta say, the optimism around here is a complete 180 from a couple months ago. Like it a lot, but slow down just a little and let's see.

And last year we went up against a QB that was dropping dimes! I am expecting a better Pass Rush in a month!

Opening day is always a crap shoot.  Teams come that basically are brand new.  New personnel, new coaches, and just 4 weeks of practice.  Overall, what player mix (experience) do you have combined with coaching staff preparation process.   Then it is in game adjustments.    I get people are optimistic, we have new talent and experience talent from big programs coming in but the question is will they gel.  Seems like the progrum philosophy is working amongst the players but will this translate onto the field and during game time.

I have been wondering the same thing.  We may have picked up a bunch of talent, but this is the first time that this team will have to play together for a real game.  Hell, they haven't had time to have a cup of coffee together and we're predicting a well oiled machine to take us to either a bowl game or the (highly coveted) AAC title game?  I can hope, but I'm still giving it the hairy eyeball.

Crazier things have happened but BYU is returning a lot of talent that led them to 10-3 last year.  Majority of this is on Defense which does not make me warm and fuzzy.  Then again, we do have a GB that beat them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

It really depends on what BYU does the rest of the year.

It's the Gerry effect.

10-3 talent on a team that USF rallied in the 2nd half... and could have tied if the defense could have gotten the ball back in the final five minutes of the game.

For me it's the "This DC doesn't want to let the defense be a passive sieve" effect. I'm sure there will be games where our defense just gets outclassed, but I'd rather we're beat playing aggressive than sitting back and watching the QB sit back and pick the D apart with ease. I'm choosing to believe that the new DC will make a very positive difference for us
