And on 3rd and 6 they drop 10 yards back consistently. Can someone who understands defense explain why you would do that? Especially when the keep throwing short for the first down.

yes

we dont want to get beat downfield so we keep the game in front of us and force the offense to execute

we dont have the talent to jam receivers at the line

We have more then enough talent to play significantly better...I'm not saying in the the top 50 in the country, but the top 80...and if we in that area, we would at least have a couple more wins...this is on Spencer...

I’m all for a light a fire under his butt, don’t get me wrong but the winds of chaos have been blowing for ten years. Scott will give him a short leash but he ain’t going anywhere this year. Scott made it a point he’s here for the haul and that there have been so many coaching changes, AD’s etc… that he is going to get at least 4 years to make it go. As El Toro and others have said defense wins championships.

I think there is progress being made. I judge that on the fact that I would have stayed for the whole Temple game and made it to about 6 minutes to go in last night's game. I am being entertained.  And Jeff Scott must have known about my dream because they scored 14 points in the second half which was the criteria I had for renewing season tickets.

The defenses abysmal performance is not just lack of talent.  Navy held Houston to 384 yards and 28 points.  I don’t believe Navy is pulling in elite talent.

I'm guessing that Navy's players are some of the most disciplined in college football and that would definitely be a factor that helps overcome talent ...

Discipline is coaching.

Agree, to a point. Those who chose the Navy route have already committed to being disciplined and I think are much more susceptible to that from a coaching perspective.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
