I think he wants to stay there, but yes he has been tearing it up there and we don't hear anything that there's even a sniff of interest in him.

Quick Google search had him mentioned concerning Arkansas, twice, and Missouri ......... but may have only been sniffs. As mentioned, though, he may just be good where he's at now for the time being ...

Not getting better QBs.

Odds are he was getting a future NFL qb when he got fired which may have helped get things turned around here ...... not saying he was let go too early but some places just aren't as easy to (re)build as others.

Not saying the “academic committee” did hamper him but he made a lot of questionable personnel decisions. Whether it was BJ or him, the decision to make Bj a pocket passer was a serious mistake. Not getting better QBs. Matt Floyd should have never been his back up plan. He played not to lose and was too conservative. We lost a lot of close games. He is not a good fit here. Slowed down the offense just like Chuckles.

This is exactly right. I remember after the 5-7 season, him saying that we were 5 plays away from being 10-2. If our defense was holding, and we were  tied or had the slightest lead, he'd go very vanilla on offense. He'd only open things up when he absolutely had to, hence all the close games. Also did that thing (on more than one occasion) where he'd be inside the opponent's 5 yard line, sit on timeouts, and  run 20+ seconds off the clock and settle for a FG before halftime. Incredibly frustrating. Had the entire stadium booing in a home game vs. Cincy for doing that. Recruiting restrictions were far from being  the only issues in his tenure here. Wouldn't want him back, but happy for him for the success he's had lately. Seems a nice enough guy.

I don't think skip was good but he got screwed by the academic standards committee....i forget the actual name. Looking back it might be the reason we missed realignment....

The academic standards changed for Skip from Jim.  Have been hesitant to defend him because haters but there are current and former coaches here at USF that think it was a mistake to fire him.  As for hating it here?  No f'n way. He thought this was a long term project and he intended to stay here for the rest of his career.  His dad is near Orlando and the in-laws were south of here.  Has 2 houses on Anna Maria Island.  He wanted to be here. Whether he would have turned it around is all speculation but he's proven he can coach with the longest bowl winning streak in college football - at least until Wisconsin plays and they get a chance to tie him.

he was a decent guy and had a lovely wife

it may be my old age but i never remembered that the academic standards changed!

how would anyone expect to build a football program with such a limitation

did we since loosen those restrictions? when? and why?

After Leavitt tanked the APR scores there was an academic committee for about 3 or 4 years that rejected players if they felt they would not be successful at USF even if they met the minimum criteria for admission.

I think after dealing with the monster CJL had become, USF put football in the corner. There was a pissing contest and football lost. And oh boy did we. Skip checked out and we are in the kiddie pool after realignment.

No. I can 100% say that from the one inside source I have inside USF football, xCWT was putting kids in the absolutely easiest places he could to keep them eligible and he was not operating under the same restrictions/expectations for academics.

It wasn't even a matter of keeping them eligible when they got here, we were not taking kids based on some unclear criteria that was above and beyond what was required.

It really does come down to this to me.  There is some unpacking you can do behind that but I can never figure out how a coach does not bring in one true QB prospect a year at least until you have 3 that you feel good about.   We got one QB and one project Ath/QB in 3 recruiting classes and he had to notice from day one that we only had one legit qb on the roster when he arrived.

Not going to knock the one he did get but you have to bring that kid(prospect) in every year and increase your chance of one developing into a quality starter.
