Even worse, FIU actually has an OCS. They can't have that much money flowing in from athletics (13k average home football attendance. That stadium must be an absolute dump.

To be fair, their original OCS was built jointly by FIU and Miami-Dade long ago... since it was also built for city and county events being that it's located adjacent to the Dade County Fairgrounds (was used for HS FB games, soccer, outdoor field events, etc)

The plans were to renovate and expand the stadium slowly, in 4 phases.  The first phase was completed when they hosted USF for the first time in 2008.  Since then, they've only been able to complete the second phase, which brought up the capacity to only 20k.

It's very very bare-bones... all bleachers, very basic concession stands ... although they do being in food carts and trucks (...but can't beat some of that authentic food)

So it's not like something USF should ever try to achieve or compare against (no matter how bad our attendance issues)

They recently got money from the Miami FC soccer team for more renovations (scoreboard, jumbotron, turf improvements) in exchange to allowing the stadium to also be their home  (I havent been there since those upgrades so not sure how it looks)

(From Miami and I used to work at FIU)

In the last decade or so college football has become a facilities arms race. If you aren't trying to build/improve your facilities constantly you are rapidly falling behind. We rested on our laurels when we had BE money when we should have been investing in the program and it's why we are behind now and will continue to fall further behind until this facility gets done

Amazing how people remember things differently.  When did we join and when did we get booted from the Big East?  We were only in the BE from 2005 - 13.   I mean in that long, long period of 8 years we failed to build an OCS and IPF.  But in the interim we did do this:
http://sportsplanstudio.com/expertise/specialties/baseball-sofball/university-of-south-florida-athletic-facility-master-plan-update.html

We did continue to get the BE buyout money for a few more years.

And it isn't like we were turning a huge profit in those BE years.

AND, not every team uses the weight room.  I can't speak to all the teams but I know the WBB team has their own.

I'm not saying we don't need a new IPF but some of you talk like we were pulling in $150 million a year like Ohio State.

You make some great points relative to timing. I think the one greatest concern I see looking back is that once the athletic building was completed their was no focus on “what’s next.” This was especially true for football. Indeed, once the IPF is built MK has got to them ask what will enhance the football program next...then start selling this. It needs to be never ending...there always has to be a push for the future when it comes to football.

I like the way USF is running things. The admin is being a good financial steward in my opinion. Keeping up with the Jones leads to financial ruin. USF is blazing ahead of our neighbors to the East.

USF is one of three designated preeminent universities in the state!

An On Campus Stadium is like a lifted truck that a university needs to compensate for a little pecker.

The baseball stadium opened in 2011.  Assuming the soccer stadium was close to that.  People love to *****. I tried to find our budgets for Athletics but haven't been able to.  If someone finds them for those years I don't think we'll see that we were much in the black if at all.

They also completely renovated the practice fields shortly after this.

Just found this  http://www.usforacle.com/2011/06/09/sun-dome-renovations-funding-approved/

Sun Dome got a $35 million renovation reopening in 2012.  We've improved our facilities.  But we wasted all that money while in the BE.

Here is an interesting tidbit in that article:

"BOT chairman John Ramil said during a workshop that meeting the costs of the renovations would not exceed $35.6 million. The USF Foundation will initially provide $10 million, and the Athletics department will provide additional funds, but Hoad said the Sun Dome’s future revenue will eventually pay back the costs of construction."

Not sure a football facility can do that.  They may steal some events from Ray Jay but I'm thinking not many.
