It happened over a helluvalot longer than several years. It happened over decades of football, slowly building a fanbase through climbing the lower levels of college football, to where they can really appreciate things like AAC championships. USF CAN'T mimic that so I'm not really sure what the answer is ...... other than the P5 invite. We didn't struggle to get students out then, I don't think, even expanded their section ........ what didn't happened back then, where I agree with you, was getting alumni involved enough to make our donation levels match where our football levels .... and that may have more to do with the mindset of a huge portion of that alumni rather than anything that could have been done.

We didn't build slowly like they did. Then we got banished.

We also have 3 pro teams in the city to compete with the Bulls. UCF competes against the Magic, Solar Bears and Universal/Disney. Not to discount the theme parks but it is a lot easier for UCF football to become Orlando's team than it is for USF to become Tampa's team.

You left out their soccer team which is probably more popular than those others but you are exactly right. They are basically a college town on steroids ...

Orlando City soccer is very popular over there, they get sell outs on the regular.

I'm old enough (barely) to remember the old Tampa Bay Rowdies, were basically the only game in town (well the Bucs were just starting out) and were very popular at the Old Tampa Stadium.  Thats also why USF basketball was pretty popular back then  (Charlie Bradley days) and were televised on local stations regularly.

When you don't have many options and you are a general sports fan - you will support whatever is available.
