I've read this a couple of times.  Is that what happened?  Didn't he get fired after MH became AD?  I can't believe a university president would hire an AD and say, "And, oh, by they way I'm firing your head men's basketball coach."  I truly don't recall the sequence but thought the firing of Heath came after the hiring of Harlan.

I thought Doug fired Heath on his way out ... I don't think Harlan had anything to do with the firing, at least not publicly.

Looks like he was fired just after Harlan was hired, but it wasn't Harlan's decision..

"Heath met with new athletic director Mark Harlan for roughly 20 minutes on Thursday, but said Harlan indicated to him he wouldn't be the one deciding on Heath's future. Heath said his assistants have been retained for now."

I know Doug didn't want him fired.  Still hard to believe a new AD has no input on such a prominent job.

It was probably decided before Harlan was even hired.

By whom?  If by the President, wow. Maybe the Board of Trustees or someone on that Board?  Just makes no sense.

A good AD should recuse himself from any input like that because of not being familiar with all the circumstances. Word I got was that MH said if you're going to fire him, do it now .... and the fact that DW wasn't the one to inform Stan kind of confirms to me your comment on his stance.

Brian Gregory may well turn out to be a terrific coach for our basketbull team. Of course, we all hope so! However, I wish Harlan had not pulled the trigger so fast and waited a few more days to see what coaches would be fired elsewhere. I really would  have liked to have a chance at hiring Tom Crean or Lorenzo Romar (unlikely as that may have been). Looks like Steve Alford may go home to his alma mater and coach Indiana University.

Here's playing devil's advocate. Say you wait for more coaches to be fired after tournament season. Those coaches show no interest in USF or get jobs elsewhere; then Gregory gets a job at a higher profile program now that he has more options.

Then everyone on TBP would complain that Harlan "sat on his hands" and didn't make a quality hire.

Gotta give props where props are due. I come down on TDS a lot, for usually extremely valid reasons, but this article by an an ex TBP member is ******* awesome and hits multiple nails squarely on the head.

Brian Gregory Is Perfect For USF, But You Wouldn’t Know That From Reading The Paper
