So. They have decided to let the people choose what new format 98.7 will get now over at http://thenew987.com and here are the choices as follows...

  • 98.7 The Wave - Pop Hits
  • 98.7 The Buzz - Alternative?
  • Power 98.7 - Hip Hop Hits
  • 98.7 The Cow - Classic Country
  • 98.7 The Arrow - Classic Rock (similar to The Eagle)
  • V98.7 - Hip-Hop and R&B
  • Now 98.7 - Top 40
  • 98.7 Jamz - Rhytmic
  • 98.7 The Point - Indie
  • Hallelujah 98.7 - Gospel
  • 98.7 The Skool - Classic Hip-Hop
  • Solid Gold 98.7 - Oldies
  • 98.7 The Hog - Active Rock (most likely format for a Bubba The Love Sponge return)
  • Easy 98.7 - Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock/Easy Listening (Similar to the Dove)

All the "Samples" they have for each format are so poorly put together that it's just laughable and this company should be punished for refusing to continue to carry our athletic programming on their frequencies it's just pathetic and I hope Beasley broadcasting goes bankrupt for what they did to the University (screwing them over)

The Fan stunk, plain and simple. They tried to big time it when it first started. Mike Pepper is a nice guy, but he totally screwed the pooch as Program Director when the Fan first started. After they alienated Tampa sports fans, they just couldn't recover. And Booger McFarland should stay far, far, far away from any more radio broadcasting.

So other than alternative or 80s music, making it one of those genres is just more saturation.

Radio in Tampa has become a joke the last few years, and sports radio is right there with it. 620 isn't all that interesting, 1010 is mostly CBS syndicated junk and changes output at night so it's mostly static, and I barely get 1040 half the time, and there's always a nice overlay with beeping noises every so many minutes. (And no, I don't want to listen to national shows, I want to hear about local stuff)

Tampa needs a good BLUES station. People are missing some great music.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
