Is this true? Seems really hard to believe given that all the facilities in Tampa are fixed cost. The costs in Tampa are just as fixed as the costs to go to Vero. They've got it down pretty well after 3 years. It's cost neutral to go to Vero. Except re: having the facility already vs. having to rent out a facility, having student housing secured vs. getting hotels, etc... but I'll defer those more knowledgeable. Facility is already owned by athletics, but it's likely they have to "pay" the university for the dorms and food. Overall, it costs the UNIVERSITY more, but it may or may not cost ATHLETICS any more. The big difference I see is the travel down and back, plus the facility rent (which may be tossed in for free due to the number of rooms/ meals being purchased)

Looks like the difference cost is $137k (not inclusive of travel expenses). Worth it, in my opinion, if it helps the team... You have a new head coach trying to put in a new culture. If he likes this camp idea-- he might still run with it but perhaps change the venue. But I wouldn't be upset if he did something different. They're already bent out of shape over our recruiting class.

However, practicing those first couple weeks at Camp Cupcake allows the practice fields on campus to survive the non-stop rigors of fall practice. The practice fields come pretty loose and lead to injury with two-a-days. Keeping those fields in great shape is one benefit of Camp Cupcake. Excellent point. Time for a cultural change. Don't emulate the worst two years we ever had.

The program needs a complete overhaul from the two-year beat-down, so anything that puts a new stamp of approval in place is the way to go. WE say a lot of things on here...like it brings exposure...somehow seeing guys practice is going to sway a blue-chip to sign on the line which is dotted, but I'm just not sure about that. It's practice. It's not like these high school kids, the ones who will play, don't already have an awareness of USF, so I'm betting that the 'goodwill tour' is of marginal (if any) ROI. And if the past years are an example of the benefits from this little junket...maybe it is time to hang around the house for a summer.
