GAME DAY vs. Howard
When the Bulls and Bison meet for the first time ever, it will mark a homecoming for four Howard coaches. Bison Head
Coach Larry Scott was a member of USF’s original team, playing offensive tackle for the Bulls from 1997-99. The
2000 USF graduate went on to serve on the Bulls’ coaching staff from 2005-12, helping USF reach six-straight bowl
games and climb to the No. 2 national ranking in 2007. Bison wide receiver coach Lindsey Lamar was a RB/WR/KR
for the Bulls from 2009-12, earning Big East Special Teams Player of the Year honors in 2010. A 2012 USF graduate, he
went on to serve on the coaching staff for four years (2015-19). Howard’s special teams/defensive line coach Vernon
Hargreaves served on the USF coaching staff from 2010-12 in the same capacity and his son, Vernon III, was born in
Tampa, played at Wharton HS and for the University of Florida, and was the No. 11 overall pick at cornerback by the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2016 NFL Draft. Bison defensive coordinator Troy Douglas was on staff at USF as a
secondary coach from 2006-08.

EXPLOSIVE SPECIAL TEAMS: Jimmy Horn Jr.’s 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half in
the Bulls’ season opening loss to BYU marked USF’s fourth kickoff return for a touchdown in the last eight games. Brian
Battie led the nation and earned Consensus All-America honors in 2021 after posting three.

WEAVER CLIMBS CHARTS: Junior wide receiver Xavier Weaver led USF with 715 receiving yards in 2021, the
fifth-best season in program history, and posted a career-best 113 yards on five catches in the season-opener, moving
him into 14th all-time on the career receiving chart with 1,130 yards. A season similar to last year would move him into
the top four all-time at USF and he currently stands 1,006 yards behind all-time leader Andre Davis (2,136, 2011-14).
