I say we pick one of the "successful" G5's that we aspire to, competing in a market against 3 major sports franchises and 2 major college state football programs, with a less than 30 year old program that's taken a step back in conf affiliation and emulate what made them successful ...

I didn't know whether to Upvote or Smiley face you.  I decided to upvote you.   It's funny how many people completely forget/ignore these facts when talking about our program.

Things came too fast and too easy, which the credit goes to Athletics back then, and especially to CJL ..... but it was a blessing and a curse.

Aren’t the computers still at work with their rankings, or did someone unplug them all?

I don't think it was "easy".  Maybe right place, right time but there was a lot of hard work by CJL and company to get us to where we were.  The administration dropped the ball from there

CJL made it look easy and the administrations to blame are the ones who passed on football for so long.
