My guess is they probably didn’t have an option which is why they felt they had to build a stadium. No one on planet earth in any country for any sport at anytime has had building a stadium be a solid investment for them. Literally any study shows it’s a money pit, the world is littered with stadiums that are dilapidated not to mention the countless ones that have been bulldozed to become parking lots. Not one professional team has decided a stadium is worth them paying for and even when they force a city to pay for it they still just want to lease it and not actually own it because even for free it’s still negative equity. The fan in me would love to have a OCS but as an adult I recognize there is no worse an investment the university could make. What? How many Universities have OCS? How many don’t? I guess you know something the majority doesn’t The majority of schools were built along with their stadiums when building a stadium cost roughly $12. Also the majority of universities are land grant universities in the middle of nowhere that have no other opinions for a stadium than building their own. When it comes to urban universities that have an option of not building a stadium on their own dime the numbers are far more mixed. Finally most universities have big donors and if your boosters want to waste their money they weren’t going to donate anyway on building a stadium it’s maybe not the worst idea. We don’t have these donors and building an ipf for a fraction of the price is taking us roughly 20 years. To build a stadium is to mortgage our university’s future and anyone thinking with their minds over their hearts is aware of this fact. I love to complain about Ray Jay and our administration not building an OCS but if anyone in power seriously considered building one in this environment they are incompetent and should be fired immediately. No one on the planet wants to own a stadium if they can avoid it, every single owner of every single sport tries to get the city to buy the stadium and then to further prove that ownership of a stadium is probably the single worst investment on the planet they don’t even want the city to buy it for them they just want to lease it on generous terms because even when someone esle pays for it owning a stadium is still too expensive to be considered more of a benefit than a liability. Add to it the uncertainty of college football, the instability of anything less than P5 football and that we have a suitable alternative and building a stadium in this environment would make me question the worthiness of our new president. A stadium is a fun idea for fans to throw around but if a president does more than humor our ideas they should be fired. That being said we should pretend to more interested than we are and try to get community support to renegotiate something closer to Pittsburgh because the city of Tampa and USF got hosed by the Bucs and we deserve better for our tax dollars. In my fantasy world, the city council who gave the Bucs that deal for RayJay are in front of a firing squad.

I would have felt much better about it had it went more like Pitt and the Steelers where they were treated more like each being tenants. Tampa gets to foot the bill for pretty much everything at Ray Jay while the Bucs get to reap the benefits of pretty much everything that happens at Ray Jay, it makes no sense from a community standpoint but it must be nice to be the Bucs.

Privatize the profit and socialize the cost. Textbook deal of what not do do. Especially with the studies showing mixed results of money generated by having a pro sports team locally.
