Excellent.  Hope they do not try that BS again.

This was a minute part of that 300 page bill and I don't think any of our local politicians were involved directly in those eleven hour shenanigans but here's a little synopsis of local politician involvement from TDS article quoted earlier in the this thread ....

Negatives

  • Having various Tampa Bay area legislators openly supporting/defending this change. Ahern and Galvano are at the top of the list here.

...

Positives

  • Senator Dana Young (R-Tampa) got to point out on the floor of the Senate that President Joe Negron committed to work with USF over the summer on a “path to preeminence.”

...

When I was an aide, we would catch hell but rarely get a thank you. It goes a long way. Here are some of the legislators who spoke out today or asked questions on behalf of USF. Take a moment, tweet them or email them and say thank you.

Senator Tom Lee

Some of the strongest criticism of the last second change that hurt USF. Said he was embarrassed by the way the change was made. Twitter: @TomLeeFL

Senator Darryl Rouson

Asked pointed questions on the policy change on the Senate floor. @darrylrouson

Rep. Janet Cruz

House minority leader. Some of the most animated criticism on the House floor about the change. Top quote: “My hometown, my university was CHEATED.” @RepJanetCruz

Rep. Wengay Newton

Top quote: “What happened to USF behind closed doors was criminal.” @NewtFL

Rep. Shawn Harrison

One of the more well-known Bulls in the Florida Legislature and a regular at USF Alumni Association events. “The Bull Nation is upset and so am I.” He also mentioned Senate President Negron’s commitment to working with USF to “find a path to preeminence.” @Shawnfor63

Rep. Jackie Toledo

Brief remarks: mentioned USF changed her life, gave her a full scholarship when her family could not afford it. @ToledoForTampa

Put BS in a different can it still smells like BS.

It's always easier to ask forgiveness than it is to ask for permission. I would like to know, and there's absolutely no way to, but IF the BULL Nation didn't stampede all over this bill if any of them would have said a word.

I bet not.

Do you want your local and State politicians voting on bills when they have no clue is in them?

They're just learning the ropes before becoming members of Congress. If it's good enough for a national healthcare law, why not Florida?

They will.

You are darn right they will try this again. The point is to keep the other universities down in order to artificially prop up Florida State and Florida. If any other state institution other than USF were remotely close to becoming preeminent there would be more uproar, but we are pigeonholed on this issue. Everyone should flood their State Senators and Reps with emails expressing relief that USF wasn't robbed of the reward for its hard work in obtaining preeminent status, but that these type of transparent antics should not be tolerated. I don't know if they did, but a local politicians should have proposed an Amendment to the bill to remove the alteration of the criteria for preeminence. Stay active Bulls Nation.

Forgiveness for what?? You act like they all consciously, specifically voted against the USF chance for preeminence, which was a last minute change buried in a 300 page bill ... sometimes our overreaction on here is totally ludicrous.

I will state that; if our legislators are voting on Bills they haven't read in their entirety, they shouldn't be representing us. :offtopic:

From the TDS article ...

It was a late change, slipped in at 4:30 p.m. on the last day of the session by the presiding officers, with no opportunity for public testimony or for other members of the Legislature to amend the bill.

....

Conforming bills set policy to align with the budget and cannot be amended, only receive an up or down vote. There were talks over the weekend to see if something could be done, but this year’s legislative session was already in overtime set to end Monday at midnight. This made even the pipe dream of changing it impossible.
