His numbers weren't that great but not bc he wasn't capable, O'leary bogged down the offense too much and stayed run first until UCF was in trouble then he opened it up and let Bortles sling it.

12-1 .... Looks like GOL's strategy worked pretty well .... along with a wee bit of luck o' the Irish.

Run first is why he was able to sling it around so effectively. Few could cover those receivers one on one.

Yeah, that season was pretty much one drive away from a perfect season.

A couple players come to mind - although Terrelle Pryor was the last great recruit to supplant a well entrenched starter (granted Pryor didn't start the very first game - but he did play in the season opener and got even more play in Week 2 when OSU got pummeled by USC). He was the starter by Week 3. Why do I bring this up?

The QB who started in front of Pryor was voted the All Big Ten QB the season before AND LED OSU TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (in his only year starting). So, the similarities exist in the fact QF is a first year starter. QF had a pretty good year by most standards (however nothing compared to the year the OSU QB had). How does Asiantii compare to Pryor? Pryor was the top QB coming out of high school. Asiantii was the nation's top dual threat QB coming out of high school (which means his mobility is not an issue). Asiantii Woulard was also the MVP of the Elite 11 camp (they are slinging the rock at that camp). Who did Asiantii lose the battle to at UCLA this past season which forced him to essentially transfer if he wanted to play? Only the #1 incoming frosh QB in the nation. Asiantii was good - the incoming frosh was even better (also supplanting the guy who got the snaps for UCLA the season before when Asiantii was redshirted. The rumors at UCLA indicated Asiantii struggled with the playbook. He'll have a season and a half here to understand the playbook by the time the first game rolls around.

Honestly, it's a great situation to be in. One QB is hungry to prove he was worth every star given to him as well as the MVP of the top QB camp in the country (and he has three years to deliver on those reviews). The other QB believes this is his team. I love the fact Flowers is mobile. However his arm is suspect and unpredictable. Teams stacked the box against us week in and week out and forced Flowers to beat them over the top. Sometimes he threw a great ball and our receivers took it to the house - sometimes he over threw the receiver by 20+ yards when they were wide open. Flowers may be the incumbent QB, but he has his work cut out for him. IF he is going to hold off Asiantii, he's going to have to complete passes. Asiantii hasn't been given game time opportunities yet, but at 6'4", he can see the field better than Flowers when looking for receivers. For everyone wanting a Mack Heisman trophy run, imagine if they can't stack the box because we actually have a QB that can complete passes consistently forcing defenses to be honest. Mack will churn out some huge yards...

If you're right, Sheriff, we're in for one hell of a ride.

If Q regresses or is injured then Woulard will get his shot... If Q continues to improve game in, game out then Woulard might never get that shot.

Its a great 'problem'  to have!

Let's not move the target. The statement was "IF AW is the better QB (which I believe he is no matter how admirably QF played this season), AW should be the starting QB going into next season. Pryor, the #1 OVERALL prospect of his recruiting class, getting the starting job in the 4th game of the season, after the incumbent was ineffectual in a win over Ohio and a blowout loss to USC, does little in setting a precedent and I really don't think there are any examples out there that would. After the way USF and he finished the season, it's QF's job to lose.

The love for the back up QB!

Bench is gone, I guess AW is the new toy....

Willie will pick the best player, and worst case AW has an extra year of eligibility and will get his shot.  Seems like a non-issue to me.

“In my mind, I’m kind of like, ‘OK, excuses over'. We know what we need to do. We’ve got the right team together, and now we move forward, and we’ll evaluate and be accountable to each other, including myself, from this point forward.”

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
