I'll crap my pants if I can collect 500k a year for 4 years from my former employer for not working there.

I heard a rumor there were some schools inquiring about you, indirectly and anonymously, through a third party.  Ask for more money.

judging by this thread, people seem to lack the basic understanding that "talent" is not some vague, amorphous concept and that fielding a "talented team" merely requires having a few 4 star recruits at random positions on the roster.

a TALENTED TEAM is more than that.

1. the talent must be at KEY positions, none of which is more important than the offensive line. a HORRIBLE OLine-- and USF's is as bad as it gets in not merely FBS, but most of D1 football-- causes a domino effect: ineffective passing game which makes the offense one-dimensional and dependent on the run, which is easier to stop without a pass threat. without an OLine the offense can't sustain drives, which impacts the defense as they are forced to stay on the field longer while carrying a heavier burden.

to use a simple formula: BAD OLINE = NO PASS GAME = STIFLED RUN GAME = UNSUSTAINED DRIVES ON OFFENSE = EXTRA TIME/BURDEN FOR DEFENSE = FATIGUED DEFENSE BY THE 3RD QUARTER = DISASTER ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. wash, rinse, repeat.

2. talent is not merely having a few playmakers at key positions. it's not just having a stud QB (which we had last season and only won 3 games), a couple highly touted skill players on both sides of the ball (so much for Davis, Welch on offense... DeDe and Joyce can't do it all on D), it is also about DEPTH. can anyone here honestly say this squad has ANY type of depth whatsoever? clearly there is no depth on the OLine, there is no depth whatsoever at QB (2 walk-ons and a transfer who are still battling for the starting job 3 weeks in), and as touted as some of our receivers have been, they have yet to show up in a single game. part of that is due to the OL and QB situations.

3. the TALENT MUST FIT THE SCHEME. if u have a slow quarterback, u can't run the spread option. if u have an undersized OLine, your power run game is going to suffer. CLEARLY the talent this team DOES have is either unsuited or lacks the training to run the offense Taggart is trying to implement. some of these players have seen 3 head coaches, all of whom oversaw different offensive and defensive schemes. venture to say none of them learned any of these schemes very well, and some of these schemes (especially the offense and defense under Holtz' regime) weren't worth learning in the first place and were probably poorly taught to begin with.

i've read several people use the "well if Taggart were a good coach he would taylor his schemes to their strengths"... this is asinine. Taggart is working with many of Holtz' (and Leavitt's) players who are unsuited for his schemes. adjusting to suit the holdovers now for the sake of winning maybe 2 or 3 games this season sacrifices an entire year of development under Taggart's schemes for the young players who are still learning. that is why it is called REBUILDING.

every player with talent can't simply be plugged into any and every scheme and still be productive. Taggart is doing the right thing by taking the hard lumps now and teaching his scheme rather than delaying the travesty by working with what little talent he has that will be graduating by the end of this season or next.

TALENT is more than just stars on Scout or Rivals. there is more to it than that.

Awesome Post. Best thing I have read on the board since the start of the season.

People wanted to run Al Golden out of town just a short time ago...It took him 3 years to get a "key" win...Give it time. UCF went winless just a short time ago (not that I want to go winless). All teams have a period of rebuilding...

There's no room for this type of cogent posting on the Bullspen. :D  We'll have to take our lumps, while CWT installs his system.
