Now that I've gone through the roster and stats and everything, is it weird that I think USF might be pretty **** good this year?

I mean, like, top-40 good, not top-20 good -- massive ?'s in both backfields -- but still. Great DL, good OL, good LBs, Taggart-friendly TE.

@ruscoop I'm usually the one saying to tap the brakes on USF, but if they're top-40, they'll win quite a few games w/that sched.

Bowl game and the team to show up 4 quarters every game. Anything more I'm ecstatic anything less I'm disappointed.

To tailgate at every home game and maybe one or two road games.

I have low expectations until I see how well coach can motivate and direct these guys on the field.

I think Willie T was a very good hire

I just am not sure if the program wasn't decimated by the last couple of years and that fantastic "culture change" Holtz brought to us (who brings a culture change to a winning program?)

Louisville aside -- If we beat UCF this year, would that be considered an upset?

The difficulty with trying to predict this season, is its unknown how much our recent lack of success was based on a true lack of talent, or that we have talent that wasn't coached/developed properly.  Based on recruiting rankings (yes never solid), we aren't devoid of talent at least on paper, or not devoid of enough talent to make 6-7 wins this season a very real possibility.  Our front 7 should be very solid (if not great).  We have playmakers at TE (very important in our new offense) and some at WR.

Looking at our schedule, I would split it into three categories:

Teams with a 50% chance or better we beat:

McNeese

FAU

UConn

Houston

Memphis

SMU

Teams that we have a 25%-50% chance of beating (meaning they will be favored, but USF winning wouldn't be a big upset)

Rutgers

UCF

Cincy

Teams that we have a 25% or less chance of beating (they will favored and USF winning would be a big upset)

Mich St

Miami

Louisville

We really need to go at minimum 4-2 verse that first group to have a chance to go bowling.  I don't think that's unreasonable or unlikely.  I'm hoping for 5-1 (one slip up - likely Houston or UConn).   If we pull that off, then would just need one minor upset to go bowling.

6-6 my take, but I think players at RB will begin to step up to make this offense go, and could pull off more than one upset along the way - possibly making us 7-5 to a most optimistic 8-4.

I won't determine success by number of wins.  I think how we play and how we coach, will give us all the indications we need in year one of the CWT era.  To get hung up on wins is silly.  Had the same feeling in 1997 and have it now.  I think it's more about building, like in 1997, unfortunately.

You sound like a Holtz post game presser.  "Competing" and losing is still losing.  You see where that got Skippy.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
