AP source: PSU trustees to meet on NCAA penalty

By MICHAEL RUBINKAM

Associated Press

A person with knowledge of the situation says the Penn State board of trustees will meet Wednesday afternoon to discuss whether President Rodney Erickson had the authority to agree to unprecedented NCAA sanctions against the football program without first getting the board's approval.

The person says the trustees will meet with Erickson in State College. The person was not authorized to talk about the meeting and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Some trustees have expressed concern that Erickson violated a board rule that says the board must authorize the signing of "contracts, legal documents, and other obligations."

The Express-Times of Easton was first to report the upcoming board meeting.

Considering not notifying the Board of what was going on was a major problem during this whole sordid affair, it's kind of hypocritical to complain about them wanting to know about the sanctions before they were signed off on, don't ya think?

i like how one player tweeted how will he show his son his accomplishments from PSU...show him the ******* highlight video or the whole game tape. jesus, it's not like they confiscated every piece of game film and killed every player and announcer and person who saw those games. gimme a break. i think because of the other stipulations of the punishment, people are overexemplifying the meaning of the word 'vacated'.

lol, board of trustees is now just looking for a technicality to boot this current azzhat...good luck getting an appeal.

This was another scam by PSU BOTs figured they would let Erickson float the approval and they would sit back and wait until the PSU community reacted. After this deal erupted in a predictable shitstorm. They try to claim they weren't in on the deal. Man, these guys are a bunch of wankers who will do anything to save their own necks, regardless of how it affects anyone else. They are in in a hole and pulling in sand around them.

Dan, I bet if these sanctions had been handed to USF, you'd be pretty pissed and disappointed. Don't know what's so funny about those students reactions.

The difference is USF did not cover up for Sandusky and allow him to abuse children.

I'm not questioning the punishment. Just saying, j feel bad for the kids and fans that had absolutely nothing tk do with this cover up or scandal that are now going to be watching a great program and university diminish because of one man.

No. If the administrators and coaches had cut ties with Sandusky or turned him in way back in 1998 when they first knew of what he was doing, then yes. However, they chose to cover it up all this time instead of getting rid of him. That is what PSU is being punished for. Not because of what Sandusky did, but because of how they handled it. LOIC at its finest.

I'm sorry. 4 men. Still feel bad for the fans and players. Penn State is not the same, and will not be the same for decades. I have no idea why you don't have sympathy for those students and fans.

I feel bad for the former players since they had nothing to do with it. Why would I care about the current players or the students? The current players can transfer without penalty. If they choose to stay, that is their choice. Enjoy the obscurity. I feel no sympathy for those players. The fans arent affected why would I sympathize with them? They can still go to games. What is there to feel bad about?

Those players will do anything but live in obscurity if they stay ... Games will be televised and they will, I imagine, constantly be brought up as deciding to weather the storm out through all this crap. NFL scouts will still be paying attention. Only thing that changes from a year ago is no bowl .... although, I'm sure the B1G will have to make some sort of ruling making them ineligible for a conference championship ... but you never know.

The B1G lready did that. They are banned from a conf championship game for 2 years iirc. Youre right, obscurity was the wrong word to use. I meant more along the lines of dealing with the negative attention and lack of glory so to speak. They cant win any bowl games in their tenure there. They also have to deal with the stigma of Penn St for the next few years until people start to forgive and forget.

Jerry Sandusky Investigation Report Returns, Is Still Horrifying

Do you remember the very worst rumor you ever heard about Jerry Sandusky? The one from months ago about an alleged investigation into whether or not the convicted sex offender wasn't the only person abusing his victims?

According to two new reports, it's a real investigation, being conducted by the FBI and another division of the federal government and focusing on the boys Sandusky encountered via the Second Mile charity. CBS News reports U.S. Postal Service investigators are looking into whether Sandusky was sharing child pornography with others, and then there's this from Radar Online:

"Investigators have interviewed at least one man who claims to have knowledge of Sandusky and a very prominent man, with strong ties to Penn State, both sexually abusing a boy," a source familiar with the situation told
.

Criminal investigators from the United States Postal Inspectors are involved because sexual material involving underage boys may have been transmitted through the mail. The source says that the postal service seems to be leading this investigation, although Radar has not confirmed that information.

Just as before, we can hope nothing this despicable ever actually happened, and that the only individual directly responsible is already in jail.

Wow I was holding off on reading this thread because I thought this whole drama was complete after the NCAA released its penalties but I am in near disbelief at how much more there is to this thing than originally thought.

It's pure evil. That is how things like this occur. Evil had a strong hold inside PSU. I think they should get the death penalty for a decade minimum. Indefinite death penalty would be more appropriate. That charity should be shut down. It's my belief that the evil is still lingering somewhere and the only way to irradiate it is to completely shut down the program. The entire institution has a warped sense of morality.

Yes it is painful for the players and the fans but evil cannot be allowed to persist. Shuting down the program completely is for the greater good.

Penn State receives accreditation warning

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Penn State has been put on notice by an accrediting organization that says the university's status is "in jeopardy" based on recent developments in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which accredits universities in the Mid-Atlantic region, cited information in the school's internal investigation led by former FBI director Louis Freeh and the severe penalties imposed by the NCAA over the school's handling of molestation allegations against the former assistant football coach, who was convicted in June of 45 child sexual abuse counts.

In an Aug. 8 notice, the commission said that Penn State remains accredited while "on warning" but it wants a monitoring report submitted by the end of next month detailing steps taken to ensure full compliance with governmental requirements, that the university's mission is being carried out, that the commission will be fully informed and that Penn State is complying with standards on leadership and governance as well as integrity.

The commission also wants the report to address the university's ability to bear financial obligations stemming from "the investigation and related settlements, etc." It said "a small team visit" will be made, a standard practice "to verify institutional status and progress."

Penn State officials on Monday expressed confidence that they would be able to address all concerns expressed by the commission.

University president Rodney Erickson said that the commission "wants us to document that steps we have already taken and are planning to take will ensure our full compliance with its requirements." He said he was also confident that officials would be able to "fully demonstrate our financial stability."

"This action has nothing to do with the quality of education our students receive," said Blannie Bowen, vice provost for academic affairs in a statement posted on the university's website. "Middle States is focusing on governance, integrity, and financial issues related to information in the Freeh report and other items related to our current situation."

Bowen said the body doesn't issue a warning unless it believes that an institution can make improvements and remain in compliance, and "this is certainly true for Penn State.

"We're confident that our monitoring report and the site visit will confirm this to the commission," Bowen said.

Wow. I'm surprised they would receive an accreditation warning. I really hope it is just the acceditation board being politically correct because of they pull accreditation it would destroy the university.
