What type of hire should we be looking for? 2 we should not be looking for are:

  • No guys who used to be a hot commodity and just failed at a bigger school (Charlie Strong/Scott Frost)
  • No assistant coach who has 0 experience outside 1 winning program (Jeff Scott/any current Clemson assistant)

Categories:

  • Coordinator who has been on fire lately? Willy Korn, Jim Knowles, Jeff Lebby, Phil Longo
  • Good college coach, failed in NFL? Bill O'Brien, Matt Rhule
  • Throw a lot of money at another G5 schools coach? Clay Helton, Charles Huff, Jeff Traylor
  • Decent at a big school but not up to their expectations (Gus)? Jim McElwain, Dan Mullen
  • Wild Cards? Deion Sanders, Urban Meyer

The more important question is how do we feel about the guy doing the hiring?

If it has to happen, Deion all day.  Excitement and guy wants to rumble the establishment.  Would not be boring.

Has 11 four stars and a five star at Jackson State.

Think his strategy would be recruit, recruit, recruit then out talent our entire G5 schedule...would take that over whatever this current strategy is

Both Sanders and Lebby would be intriguing for sure.

football wise he knocks it out of the park...his off the field issues show some cause for concern

Definitely no to re-threads (Frost, Mullen, etc.) or coordinators with no HC experience (CJS).

Jeff Traylor or Shawn Clark would be dreams, but they're probably going P5. USF would only be a lateral move at this point.

Realistically, Tyson Helton would be an awesome choice. He has won a lot at WKU, has experience as a HC, and was born in Florida.

The problem is we have had high-profile failures for every type of hire:

  • Up and coming small school guy? Skip.
  • Guy who had a ton of success at our level and washed out at major program? Charlie.
  • Coordinator for major hot program? Jeff.

And 90% of the fanbase was ready to fire Taggart too, so you could add him to this list... he just caught lightning in a bottle with Flowers, Mack, and Johnson.

There is no one mold for a coach, and anyone who says "no [X type] coach" is ignoring the magnificent scope and diversity of USF's hiring failures.
