I get what you are saying...statistical anomalies are interesting in and of themselves.  I’ve seen bosses/supervisors/Deans do this. The OB theory we use here is “escalation of commitment.” Once you cross a line there is no turning back and it appears CCS is at that point right now. It is truly a psychological  phenomenon.

And I'm sure you've run into people who stick to their guns and won't even remotely entertain the idea of showing weakness (or whatever you want to call it) and make a change that is obviously needed.
