didn't the other teams in the MWC have to agree to those terms? I'm sure there commish can't just give them that sweetheart deal w/o any approval from the other schools in the league

MWC gives Boise 50% of bowl game revenue, BYU 50% of bowl game revenue. That leaves ummmmm, ummmmmmm. Sounds like a great deal for the other teams.

Any MWC team that gets to a BCS bowl gets to keep 50% of the revenue. So, technically, every team gets the same deal as BSU.

I think the national TV money and home rights pushed the scales.

]The deal will allow teams that appear on national TV more often to make more money. Also, the league agreed to sell Boise State home games in a separate package.

The Mountain West also agreed to allow teams in its conference that play in BCS games and the equivalent when the new postseason system starts in 2014 to keep half the money. The rest of the conference will split the other half. In most leagues, all bowl money is shared equally.

What the hell? If I was am still in the MWC and am not Boise, I am FURIOUS. This deal is unreal.

If you are still in the MWC and are not Boise you signed off on this deal.

Holas from freezing Boise! I am sad that we won't get a chance to play eachother on a regular basis. I am bummed out the whole Big East thing fell apart. But, what you are reading is only part of the information. Our local rag got their hands on the "Boise State Membership into the Mountain West Conference Term Sheet."

LINK if you want to read it for yourselves. Its only 3 pages long and clears up a whole lot of misinformation that has been floating around out there.

BSU does NOT retain revenues generated from selling its TV rights. In fact, the MWC and BSU have separated BSU's media rights from everyone else, but the league retains the funds for equal distribution to all conference members.

The bonus paid for appearing on national television is defined as ESPN, ESPN 2, or any other nationial "over the air" broadcast. The requirement to be considered national is to be available in 90,000,000 homes. The bonus applies to ANY MWC team appearing in a game as defined. BSU had 2 ESPN appearances and 1 ABC broadcast this year and, if this deal was present, would be in line for a $1.3mill bonus. The bonuses paid comes out of the conference kitty priro to distribution of equal shares.

The biggie, from BSU's perspective, is the retention of 50% of BCS (Access bowl) payout. Under the old system, the confernece would retain the funds, pay a schools itimized expenses, and then give the school about $3-4mill. The conference would then divide the remainder between conference schools. Now, if BSU were to make a BCS game in 2013 the gross pay out would be approx. $21mill. BSU would receive $10.5 mill and be responsible for its own expenses.

That is what the Big East says they were unwilling to do. Hope this helps clear some things up.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet from other "lower" conferences. The Big East is losing teams and the MWC is adding teams.

MWC said yes to Boise's 50% share, because most of them know Boise is the one with the brand name and clout these days. They have the bias in their favor to make 11-1 or 12-0 high percentages to reach a BCS or Access bowl. And MWC would rather have 50% of a BCS/Access bowl to split up than, well, nothing. That's not to say Colorado State or Fresno or someone else makes a BCS/Access bowl, but unless one of them decides to up and become a decade long program with 9-10+ wins every year, they're not going to be getting annual BCS payouts, and the MWC is banking on Boise State being an "Access Bowl Buster" team for the short term future so they can at least get a slice of Boise's pie - probably still light years more money than all their toilet bowl money combined (Vegas, New Mexico, Armed Forces, Poinsettia, whatever).

Cliffsnotes: Boise just officially became the Texa$ of the MWC. [suck it, Trebek]

Boise State, old Big East embroiled in lawsuit over exit fee

Published 2 days and 3 hours ago Last updated 2 days and 2 hours ago

Rana L. Cash Sporting News

The American Athletic Conference formally launched, and Boise State is officially in the Mountain West Conference. Now that that’s all settled, there’s still the matter of their dispute over $5 million.

Back in December 2011 when Boise State agreed to change conferences, it chose the Big East—the one that is now the AAC. But then the Broncos ditched that idea in favor of staying in the MWC. That should cost them $5 million, the former Big East says. Boise State says it owes nothing.

The Idaho Statesman reports that Boise State sued the league in April to have its penalty reduced to $0. The then-Big East countersued, wanting to collect on the $5 million exit fee. The Big East argues that Boise State used its agreement with the conference as leverage in MWC negotiations, and that Boise State negotiated its own television deal apart from the league, bringing down the potential value of a Big East deal.

Boise State football coach Chris Petersen, athletic director Mark Coyle and president Bob Kustra will be deposed later this month, the Idaho Statesman reports. A teleconference is slated for July 26.

According to the Idaho Statesman, Boise State characterizes its agreement with the Big East as a “memorandum of understanding” with an effective date of July 1, 2013. It says that “assuming certain conditions…were met and absent breaches,” it would join the Big East as a football-only member. Instead, there were major changes in the league.

The Big East, on the contrary, says that the agreement is a “valid and enforceable contract which took effect upon its execution and delivery in December 2011,” and that it “constitutes a legal, valid and binding obligation of the University.”

They won’t agree to disagree. Someone will win, and walk away with a $5 million headache or windfall.

Oh I dunno...I'd say a few good attorneys could wrangle a deal of less than $5M. $5M...you know, a long time ago that was a lot of money. Just say it out loud...Five Million. That's petty cash in today's business environment.
