Woolard should call all the big donors that were in his ear to fire Leavitt and have them pony up the cash. I still want to know why we extended Holtz's contract??? It is not the first time Woolard has done it with an underachieving coach. I have never heard of rewarding people for mediocrity or below average performance. We have officially become a joke of a football program. Sad, sad, sad

Crazy, but it seems this thread has gotten far off the intended track.

WOOLARD NEEDS TO GO TOO! Why would you want Woolard calling up the big donors to fire a coach that HE extended? How does that make any sense? IMO, Woolard doomed himself the moment he pushed that contract extenstion in front of Holtz.

Exactly

I think the extension was a greedy decision by woolard based on his matching bonuses of the coaches performance bonuses... Didn't he up the ante on that stuff in Holtz extension...very underhanded thing to do IMO

I wonder what Leroy would think about all this and I wonder how CJL feels when he sees this happening. I'd have to imagine for CJL this stings and part of him must be dying inside to see the collapse of all he built. Maybe i'm wrong and he is just kickin' his heels up and laughing it off but I doubt it.

Who's Leroy?

The so-called big donors should be calling for Woolard's head.

Exactly

hindsight is 20/20

bad move-- sure. But it was pushed through by everyone for the most part with very little or any resistance. USF bought the Holtz New Era nonsense hook, line, and sinker.

My guess is that Woolard wasn't solely responsible for the extension being made when it was offered. Ultimately, he does take the heat for it. But the people who have the hire/fire decision on the AD put him in that precarious position imo.

Weren't we having this conversation about an extension for Heath as well a year or so ago? Not quite sure. But part of giving an extension to any college coach is to have some consistency in the program and helping with recruiting. I was not a big fan of Heath's, but I did say that I thought a coaching carousel really does no good when you can't afford John Calipari and that type coach. Bringing in a different coach every two years isn't going to solve the problem when you are USF with limited financial resources. My guess is that was the thinking by Doug. What do the recruits do when they find out the guy they have verbally comitted to isn't going to be there? Skip faced that when he took over for Leavitt.

I am not saying that Skip is the answer, but when looking at the big picture I can understand Doug's decision. Things are bleak right now. But let's say you bring in a new, probably unproven coach with what we can afford, and there is no improvement in two years. Then what? Go out and bring in a new guy for another two years. This looks to be a similar situation as basketball. Look, the style of basketball we play is ugly but it worked out pretty well last year. Our football is looking really ugly right now. But maybe next year or the year after we see some improvement. If not, then you fire him and give the next guy at least 3 years to show some improvement. I have no problem with changing some coordinators or coaches.

We need a real coach who's actually won something significant before, cusa championships obviously don't mean anything

I'm sure coaches with BCS conference championships will be waiting in line when our position comes open ...

You can't compare the state of the football program when Holtz took over to the state of the basketball program when Heath took over. The two are FAR from one and the same. USF b-ball was the "toughest job in America" when Heath signed on. It was pretty piss poor. USF football wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either.

People keep comparing Holtz and Heath. You cannot. Not to mention Heath got his extension after 3 years. In year three USF won 20+ games for just the third time in school history. The Holtz extension was after year 2. Coming off a 5 win season.

Apples and oranges.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
