GAME DAY vs. UTSA

 

USF will hit the road looking for its third road victory of the season (would be most since 2017), sixth win overall and bowl eligibility for the first time since 2018 when they take on UTSA in a Friday night primetime game in San Antonio. UTSA will be the fourth of five first-year AAC foes the Bulls face in 2023 and the second of three first-ever meetings with programs (Rice, UTSA & Charlotte). USF won its first such clash of the year over Rice and closes the season with back-to-back first time meetings with UTSA and Charlotte.

ATKINS DIET: Sean Atkins, one of 10 semifinalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, has injected reliability and explosiveness into the Bulls offensive diet. Atkins has posted seven or more receptions in each of the last five games as he is shattering USF’s season receptions record (was 67) with 69 catches in 10 games and is just 71 yards shy of the season receiving yards mark (879) and 192 from the program’s first 1,000-yard receiving season after posting nine catches for a career-best 169 yards in the win vs. Temple.

LORD BYRUM: QB Byrum Brown added his latest 300-yard passing verse in a win over Temple, posting his second-straight and fourth overall 300-yard game (316, 1 TD) on the year to tie Quinton Flowers (2017) for the USF season record. His 2,538 passing yards are just 373 shy of the USF season record (2,911) and he is averaging 253 ypg. His 517 total yards vs Rice led the nation until Week 11 (now 2nd) and he joins LSU’s Jayden Daniels as THE ONLY TWO players in the nation with 2,500+ passing yards and 600+ rushing yards. He is the No. 6 rushing QB in the nation (659), No. 7 nationally in total offense (319.7 ypg) and No. 29 in passing (2,538).

TURN-AROUND: USF’s four-win improvement over 2022 is tied with Northwestern (1-11, to 5-5) as the best in the nation for 130 FBS programs in 2023. USF’s five wins are one better than the program’s combined win total over the previous three seasons (4-29), and the four-win improvement over 2022 (1-11) equals the best-ever, year-over-year improvement in program history, previously achieved between 2014 (4-8) and 2015 (8-5). It marks the greatest, and only, win improvement for a first-year USF head coach compared to the year prior. Alex Golesh's five wins are tied with Jim Leavitt (5-6, first year of program) for the third-best total in a USF coach’s first season.
