GAME DAY vs. BYU

USF will open its 26th season and third under Head Coach Jeff Scott with the rubber match vs. BYU. USF beat the
Cougars in Tampa, 27-23, in 2019 and BYU downed the Bulls, 35-27, in Provo last season. Last year’s meeting was
Game 4 for the Bulls and the second start (first road) for freshman quarterback Timmy McClain. USF fell behind 21-0 in
the first quarter of a 70-degree night in Provo before outscoring BYU 27-14 the rest of the way. Baylor Romney started
at QB for BYU for an injured Jaren Hall. The temperature is forecast to be 92 at kickoff Saturday, with a reel feel of
102-plus with humidity levels of 90 percent or higher and dew point nearing 80.
SEASON OPENERS: USF has won six of its last eight season openers, falling at NC State, 45-0, in 2021. The Bulls
won their last home season-opener, 27-6, over The Citadel in 2020. The Bulls are 19-6 all-time in season openers (16-2
at home) and are 2-5 in road season openers. USF’s road opener losses have come at NC State, Penn State (2005),
Alabama (2003), Northern Illinois (2001) and San Diego State (1999).
BOHANON 1-0 vs. BYU: Junior quarterback Gerry Bohanon, a transfer from Baylor, led the Bears to a 38-24 victory
over #19/20 BYU in Waco in Game 7 for Baylor last season. Bohanon passed for 231 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT while
running for 10 yards. Baylor ran for 303 yards and outgained BYU 534-409.
DOWNING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: USF’s victory against BYU in 2019 in Tampa marked the program’s 12th
triumph against a program that had won an NCAA-recognized FBS national championship. The others: Army, Auburn,
Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Miami, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and TCU.

Hansford and Grier on defense and Battie and Horn on offense (I'm a homer).
