1. Trey Laing totaled 42 tackles (30 solo), 17.5 sacks, 25.0 tackles for loss, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups. I'm going to give this man the benefit of the doubt that he can play and possibly actually tackle another player.

2. Demaurez Bellamy is a baller with high energy

3. Andrew Mims is having a great camp

4. Camp Gobler will be a star on special teams. He runs a 4.8 40yd.

5. Boyles and Grier hit the weight room hard this off season and look the part.

If you are worried, there is plenty of information and highlight films on our current linebackers  for you to decided what type of impact they can possibly make. I have no worries on our group of LBs.

Trey Laing played DE and was faster than the fat kid playing OT in front of him. Stats don't always translate from different levels because talent you play against is better. But again he did not play LB he played DE so there is a learning curve and he weighs like 214 lbs.

Sawtelle is not playing. So Macon is starting with Boyles and Grier. After that TRUE freshmen are the backups.

Mims will likely be the back-up at MLB and he is a sophomore, but we are very green at the LB spots.

Transferring success from HS, the practice field, and the weight room to actual game day is sometimes problematic. I am cautiously hopeful that the young guns will perform. I know we have talent, but essentially all of it is unproven. We are an injury or two away from being right back to where we were last year. Macon becomes the most important body we have on the defensive side of the ball now.

I think will be fine, Francis. Look do we reclaim Bull Shark for good on our defense? Can we keep callling them this?

Was going to respond with something similar to yours Bully.  Thought I'd check the 2nd page and you beat me to it. When I read what was bolded I had to look him up to see what college he transferred from.  Then saw the #s were high school.

I very rarely get excited about true freshman, but I think most recruiting sites (and teams for that matter) missed on Bellamy. The kid can flat out play, and will likely pair with Boyles as our future LBs. I’m not saying I’d feel great about him playing week 1 against Wisconsin, but he’s a very solid back up and could contribute Boyles like production as a first year guy.

Starting level talent - Boyles, Macon

Solid depth - Grier, Bellamy, Mims, Gray

Everyone else is either a special teamer or developmental player at this point

I am concerned with Grey and Bellamy being the immediate back ups due to experience but also Grey is only 208 lbs which is less that what Boyles played at last year.

So if Sawtelle graduated last year who would the D rely on for leadership? Sawtelle was no Sanchez and he was going to get limited snaps due to the addition of Macon.

They easily could have had Sawtelle and Macon on the field at the same time. They likely would have against Wisconsin.

No matter how good these players (some freshman) are/ are to become, losing Sawtelle is still a kick in the nuts for this Defense.  They may turn out to be really good players, but its going to take some time for them develop into that.  Sawtelle was already a leader and knows the Defensive schemes.

Lets not fool ourselves, this is a big loss on the defensive side of the ball.  Not hitting the panic button, its just now things have become more challenging.
