I am not following the logic of saying last years team was the only team to play for a division title?

The 2016 team had a better conference record than the 2017 team. They were tied for the East division lead but lost the tiebreaker to Temple due to head to head. 2017’s team was not  even tied for 1st.

The Black Friday game last year was played for the Division title ..... technically, I guess you could say the same thing about the 2016 Temple game, but only in hindsight.
