We have a very small fan base and little to no tradition and we aren't exactly building any kind of tradition at Rayjay either. Pitt had a thurs game last year vs ranked Va Tech with under 40k at game...I bet USF could do better than that. Curious what attendance looks like these last 2 home games. That being said, no, an OCS will not bring us into P5 consideration. However, I could argue that the long term tradition building from an OCS could. We have a very small fan base and little to no tradition and we aren't exactly building any kind of tradition at Rayjay either. When USF was in CUSA, our attendance was similar to what it is now. So, Pitt had substantially more. 2006 NATIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE 48. Pittsburgh 7 303,138 43,305 76. South Fla. 6 181,333 30,222 http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/Attendance/2006.pdf Once we moved into the Big East we increased our attendance dramatically increased. 2007 NATIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE 38. South Fla. 6 319,019 53,170 70. Pittsburgh 7 233,203 33,315 http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/Attendance/2007.pdf 2008 NATIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE 42. South Fla. 6 298,142 49,690 44. Pittsburgh 6 296,113 49,352 2009 NATIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE This one doesn't show national rankings beyond the top 30 schools. It does show: 2009 DIVISION I FOOTBALL LARGEST AVERAGE ATTENDANCE INCREASE FROM PREVIOUS YEAR 13. Pittsburgh 7 53,446 49,352 4,093 19. South Fla. 6 52,553 49,690 2,863 http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/Attendance/2009.pdf 2010 2010 NATIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE Once again they don't show national ranking beyond the top 30 schools. Pittsburgh 6 312,991 52,165 South Fla. 7 285,946 40,849 http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/Attendance/2010.pdf 2011 Our attendance rebounded. 2011 DIVISION I FOOTBALL LARGEST AVERAGE ATTENDANCE INCREASE FROM PREVIOUS YEAR 17. South Fla. 7 44,550 40,849 3,700 Pittsburgh 8 368,022 46,003 You can check other years for attendance at the link below. http://www.ncaa.org/championships/statistics/ncaa-football-attendance The point is that despite not having the football tradition of Pitt, nor its presumably much larger fan base, once given the opportunity to play in a MAJOR football conference, USF PROVED in little time that it could draw fans to RayJAY and match them in attendance in most years. If we had an OCS during the BE years, we would have sold out in just about every game we played. It wouldn't have been big enough to accommodate the demand. On the other hand if we had an OCS in the C-USA years, I suspect that most games would not have sold out. I don't think building an OCS while we are in the AAC is worth the $200 - $300 million gamble, unless USF clearly determined that doing so would greatly help us to get a P5 invite. I have seen nothing that would lead to me to believe that is the case. If USF would be assured a P5 invite, I believe that USF would build an even bigger and better stadium than currently envisioned. In such a case, many more people would be inclined to give larger donations.
