Baker uses penalties as the reason.  When both teams get a ton of penalties, maybe you should look at the officiating crew.

The refs were ridiculous.  A penalty every play is boring.

Don't blame it on the refs, blame it on the coaches for not stressing discipline, and the players for not following the rules.

Most of the penalties were for false starts and motion on offense (because we were trying to go too fast, I suppose?)

Defensive calls on Senat and Sawtelle were good calls.

If we don't clean up the penalties we're going to lose games because of them.

Wrong on the Sawtelle call...

No, it was a good call. I explained it during the game thread.

If you lift a player in an upward direction, then drive them into the ground, it's a penalty.

No upward direction, no penalty on Sawtelle. But he did, so he got one.

That describes a penalty during the play, not after. Illinois had an offensive pass interference on the play. Why then weren't the penalties offset and the down repeated? One way or another, the officials screwed up ...

This is the real problem with pre-season rankings.  Losing to, or beating, ranked teams that maybe shouldn't be ranked creates an illusion of a teams worth.

Rankings don't mean anything. I'd rather secure a conference championship than a ranking.

Rankings do mean something.  Top recruits want to play for ranked teams.
