So... I know none of us think that CWT is getting rid of Woodie any time soon, but... I am left wondering if Charlie Strong would consider coming to a place like USF as a DC. He would step in knowing that CWT is likely a goner after next year if we live up to expectations. His contract at Texas makes it very interesting as they currently owe him $10.7 million over the next 2 years with one exception...

There's one slight exception. If he finds another job, UT-Austin will be allowed to deduct 50 percent of that new salary from its payment, according to the contract. It's unlikely, however, that Strong would be able to immediately find another job paying $5 million.

So, he could come here and work for $200k/year, Texas could reduce his $5.35M payout to $5.25M. He's still getting paid. He has a good rehab opportunity, and he would be in line for a head coaching job within a year if USF wants to stick with him.

The downside of course is that he is taking over a dumpster fire of a defense on a team that puts the defense on the field for 35-40 minutes/game. He's not going to have a top-50 defense, it's just not going to happen with this offense. So, does he actually do more damage to his reputation as a coach by coming here?

We know he can recruit the heck out of Florida though, it gets him back to his roots.

I know, this is a pipe dream, but, it actually could make sense for Strong. He doesn't need to worry about money, and, if he succeeds here, he will get another P5 coaching job. The guy just did too well as UFs DC and ULs HC to get left out in the cold.

I posed the question earlier.  I won't happen, but it would be great.

Yeah, one day - not this day, of course - but one day, USF will be* the sort of school that picks up 'known commodity' coaches to fill holding-pattern-positions. We have a ways to go before that starts.

This would be the biggest wet dream in USF history if he somehow ended up here.

You would like to think USF wins its bowl game (preferably over a name brand like Georgia) by once again outscoring a team, giving the Bulls the press needed for next season (potential access bowl) to get a guy like Strong looking for a one and done turnaround to take a chance on a G5 program.

I think Strong takes the year off. Then takes new a job next year or becomes an SEC defensive coordinator

He will spend a year working for ESPN probably. If not, Notre Dame needs a DC don't they? They'd be a bigger "turnaround" story than USF's D if they win even 8-9 games next year.

The defense keeps themselves on the field for 35 to 40 minutes a game by not being able to get off the field .

I still don't understand why anyone would think Strong would even have the slightest interest in coming to USF.  Especially at a reduced salary.

He has no ties at all to USF.  He is going to receive a buyout of $10 Million.  He could probably take a head coaching job at a mid tier P5 or lower school.  Could probably have just about any DC job at a big time school making more than he would make as a HC here.

The logic of a guy of Strong's accomplishments at this stage of his career coming here as a DC makes as much sense as the CEO of a Fortune 500 company losing his job and then becoming a manager of a Mcdonalds.
