Who does it help to put people in jail for having some pills?

Just might could argue it could help the potential drug-driving victims...

Also, the fact that it's illegal and jail time is an option makes it a deterrent for some (not all obviously).

Possession and driving under the influence are two separate issues. Correct me if I'm wrong, but nothing I've read in this case indicates that he was driving under the influence of Xanax, just that he had a couple of pills.

http://www.indeed.com/salary/q-Corrections-Officer-l-Florida.html most of those employees don't make ****. The cost to house one inmate for a year is about the same as the average guard salary in Florida. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-cost-of-a-nation-of-incarceration/

He wasn't charged with driving under the influence, and you better believe they would have charged that if they could. So, we are just talking about the act of having two pills in your pocket. Who does that hurt, again?

I'm not sure how it doesn't.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm feel pretty confident that I - at least - suffered no injury from him having a couple pills in his pocket. My wife seems ok too, although I'll check.

Also, here is what the data tells us: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/10/25/us/racial-disparity-traffic-stops-driving-black.html?referer=

Driving while being a minority is a real thing. The same way you get profiled for driving a clunker, or being in the wrong part of town (ex. Black guy in a nice neighborhood or white guy in a black neighborhood). We have a crazy police state here and believe it or not the oppression is real.

I got pulled over as a young, white guy in a predominately black neighborhood in Jacksonville.  Me a couple of buddies got lost.  The cop told me that the only reason young, white guys are in that neighborhood at night were to buy drugs or hookers.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
