Article by Joey Knight. My wife asked "Does Taggart want to get fired?"  Maybe that $400k without doing any work is appealing to him?

Taggart committed to offensive plan

BY JOEY KNIGHT

Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - A month into the season, the sleek, powerbased offense Willie Taggart promoted as 'fast' and 'exciting' hasn't lived up to the latter adjective.

But entering Saturday's homecoming game against Syracuse, the Bulls coach is neither conceding - nor overhauling anything.

'Obviously we haven't provided that (fun and excitement) if you watch what we're doing,' Taggart said Monday. 'But I don't think we're far from doing it.' Taggart's conservative approach in the second half of Friday's 24-17 loss at Memphis - in which USF found the red zone only once - elicited periodic choruses of boos from the Raymond James Stadium crowd of 14,305. Taggart assumed blame for not calling more plays to loosen up Memphis' defense after halftime.

But the Bulls will remain a run-first team, he said Monday. Entering Saturday's game against an Orange squad that already has posted 11 sacks, the Bulls rank 28th nationally in rush offense (210.5 ypg) and 107th in pass offense (166.3).

'Some of (the receivers), the execution is not there, and we're not this team that just drops back and throws it to our receivers 80 times a game. That's not what we do,' Taggart said.

'We've got some talented running backs that's pretty much the strength of our team, and we're gonna utilize those guys and try to throw the ball off the run. That's who we are and who we're gonna be.'

If we had just a 70th ranked passing attack this offense would be pretty good.

That is impressive running numbers considering we run into 7 man fronts 70% of the time.

Capt Ahab is going down with this ship hell or high water.

I just heard him on 620 this morning and he reiterated these exact comments.  He's doubling, tripling and quadrupling down on his conservative run offense.  When asked if he second guessed him self for not opening up the playbook in the second half, he said no.  He did mention he should have called a little more play action.

I don't think he's trying to get fired.  I just think he's plain dumb.

This plan might work if we were in a FCS conference.

If no changes made expect a 2 -3 win season at best.

I realize he doesn't like the wrs on how s team but that doesn't mean you can't screen pass to your rb or hit your tes more.  Just go with 2 rb sets and mimick the triple option a little.

We better stay a run first team, look where our offensive talent lies. 3 RB's. That being said, we need to pass more to keep the opponents from stacking the box, knowing the run is coming every down.

So - run first ---- yes!

Run all the time --- no!

I think he his confidence in system was boosted again by his previous bosses success in Michigan.  He is saying to himself " YOu see it does work."   Yes Taggart it does work if you are Michigan and we are not them. He thinks we are going to lean on people and they will make all these mistakes and we will win.
