I think when GOL says some schools may get out of the game altogether, it couldn't be that they just won't pay CofA. That would be too dramatic for GOL.

I think USF will make it work, but I agree after a couple years most schools will probably blackout of committing $2-$3 mil extra a year to already struggling athletic budgets

Remember, for G5 school it is not all or nothing. After seeing how this impacts their finances, they can simply come back and say we are going to offer a $1,000 stipend (which $4000 would have covered the true cost of attending). I think a lot of G5 school have visions of keeping up with the Jones, and they might be able to do it in the short run, but in the long run the TV money of P5 will win out.

I will say this, any G5 school (like USF) who wants to move up, better pay the stipends, because G5 will want P5 schools who act like big time programs, and not ones that act like small time programs.

Less than 25 teams run a profit or break even. That's not why schools have football. They tolerate it as a loss leader because it's the way to get the name of the school out there, it's publicity. If it was all p/l, yes, the model is broken and many programs would go under, but it's not seen that way.

So you're agreeing or disagreeing with GOL?

More schools are starting football programs then leaving it. They see it as advertising. If football leaves it will more likely be due to the head injury issue, with some evidence that the damage occurs not only from concussions but those harder hits that occurs several times a game. However there is a medication that looks promising.

Just watched a video of George O'Leary talking about cost of attendance stipend.  He brought up a good point that he doesn't see how non P5 schools will be able to sustain the numbers they are giving out...thinks it will put many schools out of the game altogether ultimately.  FWIW he didn't give an exact amount for UCF's stipend but said its around 5k give or take a hundred.  Just also read that they spent only 226K on recruiting last year, so they will spend much more on stipends than actual recruiting.

what a blowhard. funny how the multi-million dollar coaches salaries don't seem to bother him. giving the actual players we pay to see a little cut won't be a program's undoing.

we have 200 (?) athletes(football scholarships 85 + basketball scholarships 12 double to include women) that will receive the stipend. That's $1M per year. a drop in the bucket compared to facility costs, coaches salaries, AD salaries, etc. our athletic budget is $44M. The stipend will add just over 2% to that number. sure some small programs won't be able to handle it but that's the case even when it comes to scholarships. that's why lower level programs don't offer them.

Yep. They need to cap coach salaries. Truly level the playing field.

What?!?!?! Your post seems to contradict itself and is very confusing.

SO more schools are starting football and "leaving it" but if a college/university allows football to leave it would be due to a head injury?????

Can you clarify as I'm not following you?

Who has started a program and "left it" just to advertise for their institution?

First off other than a few teams like UAB and Lower division teams, no one is leaving football. And UAB is coming back . There are over 700 college football programs at various levels. And new teams are coming in. At the FBS level about 22 teams break even or make a profit. Teams are used for publicity. Schools accept losses because football programs are high visibility and they bring in money from doners and interest from potential students.

However there are new things on the horizon, the concussion issue being the biggest one. The NFL just settled a lawsuit where they going to set aside around a billion dollars for previous players to be diagnosed and treated for chronic head injuries. Chronic head injury has shown up in high school kids playing not only football but other sports such as soccer. And chronic brain injury has shown up in high school kids with no concussion history that play football. To put it simply, the human brain was not built to play football. And it hasn't been long that this was known. So if it gets to the point where we find out a high number of people playing football and having chronic injury to the brain and they start to sue, that is a serious threat to schools having football. There is a lawsuit going on right now, the NCAA being sued by former players with head injuries. http://collegefootball.ap.org/article/plaintiff-concussion-lawsuit-vs-ncaa-opposes-settlement

There are documentaries and books on the subject such as The System, a book, or Schooled, a documentary by Epix, and Frontline did a documentary on concussions, CTE and the NFL. AlsoI believe HBO sports did a documentary on concussions and brain injury in girls soccer recently.

For some reason I am unable to post links.  CBSsports.com released an interesting article that laid out all the CoA stipends for each school ordered by conference.  The AAC stacks up pretty well, I must say.  Half the conference is at or over $4000.  It goes into some detail that I found informative.
