Not offering him a scholarship doesn't mean anything. CWT needs to be bowl eligible next year. Another true freshman QB is not going to do that at least not at our end of the recruiting pool.

The answer for CWT is either on roster or in the transfer pool.

While true, he has a QB problem to worry about in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 and eeking out a pass this year just means the expectations grow again for 2016 and he still has no solution. The number of guys who were Mike White esque their first two years and turned into solid players their last two isn't very long. So for CWT to move from "good enough to not get fired" to "above average" he's going to have to teach Flowers how to throw or Kean is better than nearly every college coach in the FBS thinks. All are possible, but to say they're unlikely is being too kind.

Again, just because these guys haven't been good, doesn't mean you offer any dude that's attempted a pass in HS a scholarship.

You do when your current QBs would have to improve their play just to be called awful.

And if Mike Riley thought he was good enough to play QB, that's good enough for me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I would usually agree with you but our QB situation is bleak, especially post-White, given that it looks like we only have one true QB on the roster.

I spoke to a few of the coaches at the signing day party

It looks like this year, the NCAA changed the rules on how you can offer scholarships.

From my understanding:

Before you can offer any kid a scholarship, which is why a lot of schools would have 20 - 30 kids committed very early on, even if they only had less actual spots available.

Only on signing day you have to make sure you only sign your limit.  So many kids changed schools last minute because the school then informed them (behind the scenes) that they wouldn't be able to join the team (such as the school securing their primary target.)

Starting this year, if you only have 20 spots available, then you can only offer 20 scholarships.. that it.  If a kid says yes, then that slot is taken.  So you cant offer multiple kids for "backup" reasons

So they have to be more stringent on offering kids because they have to choose which kids you know 1) will benefit the team and 2) will actually say yes.

This may explain why USF didn't have too many commits early on the recruiting cycle.

There may have been some changes to the process, but I don't think this is right.  Our final signed number includes some amount of built-in future attrition, so it can't be as simple as "they could only sign X number."

Absolutely not true.

NO team at any level of play signs all the players it offers.

Transfer pool, in light of letting Pensyl go to the mighty EMU Eagles. Cripes.

Wasn't Louisville involved in there somewhere, too .... or do I have him mixed up with someone else?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
