When did ECU become the bear?

When they became the AAC's best hope and pretty much commandeered the ACC Coastal

When did ECU become the bear?

That was my first thought. It's a conference foe, and we have a history with them going back to Conference USA, but I've never thought of them as "a bear."

Apparently, not all of the college football stratosphere has grown enamored with East Carolina senior QB Shane "Cap'n" Carden, who brings the  nation's seventh-ranked offense (581.5 ypg) to Raymond James Stadium on Oct. 11.

Count Bulls DL Eric Lee among those yet to be bowled over. When asked Wednesday about Carden, who has more career 400-yard passing games (five) than USF's entire program (one), Lee said: "Nothing special."

"He's like any other quarterback. He's short, that's...the only assessment. Of course you can't underestimate or overestimate though. You've just gotta go out and come out here and practice for whoever is in front of you."

Naturally, Coach Willie Taggart begged to differ. Incidentally, Carden, who already has thrown for 1,469 yards and 11 TDs in only four games for the 22nd-ranked Pirates, is listed at 6-foot-2.

"I don't think (Lee) was looking at the same East Carolina film," he said.

"Really talented football team. The quarterback's a stud. You watch the kids play and they play with a lot of confidence, they play fast. ... They've all been playing together for a while now, and you can see it in the way they react to negative things that happen in the game. They don't get flustered or anything, they respond, and they respond fast."

ECU will not take their foot off the gas next weekend.....

Like they were going to anyway if the opportunity presented itself .... we took their spot in the BE, remember?

Is Carden better than Bortles? I'm guessing we had fans saying the same thing about UCF before the game last year ..... this is why they play the game.

THIS^^^ they don't need motivation.  And its not a huge dig...he's just saying he's not scared.  Should he be?

I don't like giving incentive to other teams, but they planned to come in here & smoke us no matter what.  As a G5 leader, they need to win out, and convincingly, to get a good bowl.  So...our boys better show up fast & furious.

I wish ECU was playing someone other than the softest team in football, but maybe SMU can play physical enough to send them to Ray Jay a little battered & bruised.

As long as he backs it up. They're 0-4 just like UCiF was, so they'll be bringing their best regardless. We really need to find a way to get up on them early, and if our D comes out strong like it did the first half last week, we have a solid chance here.
