I get that. I quite likely would have done the same thing... but he did take what seemed like the very first P5 offer to come along.  It seemed like he didn't feel like he could have increased his stock by sticking around another season or two.  Kinda like a 3rd-year sophomore who declares for the draft and gets picked in the fourth round... but could have been a first rounder if he stayed.

Maybe, but it's not like he went to Wake Forest ...

Imagine if he never went to Oregon... he stays just one more year... USF likely wins the AAC and gets to a NY6 bowl... FSU would have called.... Strong would not have come here... USF's past six seasons would have been different... perhaps even dramatically different.

Maybe if Taggart was a defensive minded coach. We didn't not get to the ccg because of offensive deficiencies ....

high level programs find great coaches who stick around. We fired ours.

With a few exceptions that is simply NOT true in the G5 world.

Curious to see what happens to TCU after they fired their Leavitt.

Myabe ... but let's point out that USF went 10-2 in the year after Taggart  ... and lost those two with less than 1:30 play in each game because of the 4th and 24 play by Houston and a kickoff return for a TD against UCF.

That was my point. Why was it likely if Taggart had stayed, USF wins the AAC? He wouldn't have brought anything that changed those outcomes ..... although the Houston loss didn't matter. We would still have had to beat UCF even if we had beaten Houston.

This statement was about Willie.

He ended up as a special assistant head coach at Texas.

Sounds familiar, still dumb. When you are competing for resources having someone competing harder for those resources in your realm is bad for you no matter how hard you try to mental gymnastics it. There are only so many tv time slots, so many top recruits, so many advertisers, so many P5 spots and so many college kids that will be diehards; you should want all of them and when someone else takes any of them that’s worse for you no matter how you try to spin it. S + C = X and the only way to gain for one is to take away from the other.
