I agree but our defense hasn't been ready for the challenge and we are so far behind by halftime it doesn't matter. Time for the offense to get a shot. If it goes well maybe the Defense is fired up and ready. If it goes poorly. Well at least the opponent didn't score in the first minute of the game.

In most situations, I'd say defer.  But in our case, let's not give the opponent better odds at being up by 7 early.  I'd love to see what this team does when they are not playing from behind.

Sounds like we are all in agreement. We should receive the kickoff.

I'm pretty much in the camp that who starts with the ball the second half is usually of greater importance than the opening kickoff ....

I am in that camp as well, but we've started off slow in 4 of the 5 games we've played, so an adjustment like this could help us.

I would say you go with what you are better at. If you have a better defense, you kick, hold them and get better field position. With our defense, I say get the ball and try to score and make the opponents play from behind. We have not led in any games we lost at any time.

Right? But he kicked last week as well.

I didn't like that, although we do start badly.  If we marched down the field and scored and then fired the defense up it would set the right tone.

But last week was a perfect example of why you defer. We were down 17-3 at the half (after leaving points on the board I might add) but we received the ball to start 2nd and went down to score making it a one possession game at that point. SMU receives ball 2nd half and they would have had a chance to go up by 3 possessions, almost icing game at that early junction.

We also scored coming out of the half at BYU, too. I'd be stunned if CJS didn't defer if we win toss.

Good point.  Just once i would like to see what happens the other way around though. Score early and often and they can have the ball to try and catch up to us for once.

I wonder if it statistically matters.  Where is puc when you need him?  If you get the 1st half kickoff and don't score you're not in a good position.

From an SI article I just read about this says there isn’t a statistical advantage to either receiving or deferring to the 2nd half. The article was a couple years old, but had some good info. They said it’s more of a “everyone is deferring, we should too type mentality.” The articles below are talking about NFL, but I guess it would be similar for college.

here is a link to the si article: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si.com/nfl/jaguars/.amp/news/nfl-coaches-prefer-to-defer-but-doug-marrone-change-for-jaguars-sake

Today, coin toss winners almost always choose to defer, but it took time for...

I wonder what it's like heading into the half with the lead.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
