"Give us their schedule and we only have a loss to LSU..." So by this logic, you're saying the difference between USF and WKU is 3 points (loss to Indiana). 

"...Much more impressive defensive performances." How, exactly? WKU defense gives up less than 11 points per game in the first half while the offense has over 30 points per game by half. Everything after half is garbage time usually. You can't use the final scores as comparisons.

Have a look at S&P+ ratings and F/+ ratings to get a better idea of how the teams compare with opponent-adjusted statistics. 

I can't stand by S&P+ as they do not have UCF as the worst team in the world this year, but the F/+ ratings look all right.

And here's why. In 2014, WKU played @ Navy and beat them. Both teams were pretty much the same as this year, give or take. Western Kentucky finished with 551 yards of total offense.
