Did CWT implement the spread in the spring game or was it the old offense?

It floors me that Taggart insists on retaining play-calling duties.

He can't get out of his own way.

And he has no one else but himself to blame if it fails.

Not really ... Word is that Harlan forced him to go to the spread and probably told him he had to call the plays, too.

You're right, I forgot that Harlan and Taggart DID have a conversation.  Thanks for reminding me, Shadow.

Taggart didn't begin either of the first two seasons calling plays.  I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm correct.  Each season he took over play calling duties midway through the season.  For me, I don't mind him calling plays.  I guess that stems from where I was when he first got here.  I do recall everyone thinking he would come in and be some sort of savior, I just laughed at that.  We were a terrible team.  I'm not sure if anyone could call plays with what we had then.  Marcus Shaw was our starting RB and we had a 275 pound center (Reiter) and a totally weak and soft offensive line... I won't mention Bobby and Matt.  I remember laughing at some of the cazy predictions on twitter, it really was hilarious.  We were starting a walk-on corner, who was not good.  Durden was a starting corner smh.  I thought that team would be lucky to win 2 games and that is exactly what they did.

Last season they finished about where I thought.  I thought they'd win 5 games, if things went right.  I think anyone who thought they would win more last season didn't take into consideration how young the team was.  I mean I'm as big of fan as anyone but I'm realistic about what I expect.

This season I see them winning 7-8 games.  I think they really do have a shot at 8 wins.  I'm actually excited about this season.  This is the first time I think we have a good shot at winning some games.  Now everyone else seems to be going in the other direction.  I find that funny.

Back on topic though...  I would not be surprised to see the offense have a huge turnaround this season.  I think Mack will likely rush for more than 1,500 yards and the offense will go as he and Flowers legs go.  Play calling becomes easier when you have play makers and we finally have some.

Didn't he try to not retain the duties last year and ended up just taking it over again? I was hoping the however many headed dragon of offensive coordinators would somehow improve this.

No. I recall he relinquished play-calling to Wulff last year, and Taggart only took them back over a little after the halfway point (my memory is a bit fuzzy as to exactly when). I'm a bit intrigued to see how co-offensive coordinators in Hope and Reeves is going to pan out. Man, I really hope we turn the corner this season.

The game was so ugly I'm pretty sure the players don't even remember what system they were using...

100% agreed

Although I do remember SOME (a few) people mentioned that it was going to take about 3 years to reverse the downward spiral after Skip's final year.. and said we need to be patient

After 1 season, some of those were already calling for Taggart's firing.

I was one of those who agreed that 3 years was needed

After the 1st season... the results (record) ended just about where I thought it would ... Although I didn't think we would lose that first game... I was pretty sure we had a chance to only win vs McNeese and FAU.. but wouldn't have been surprised if we lost the rest (including losing vs Uconn and Cinci)

To me, the McNeese loss revealed more about the team that Taggart was left with than his coaching ability.  It reaffirmed to me that this was indeed going to be a long rebuilding process.

Before year 2, I was still doubtful due to the roster consisting of Skip's players.  My doubts were pretty much substantiated when a good number of freshmen were named starters.  I knew again it would be a bad season.. but one that was used to build experience with the young players.

I'm starting to think this season (season 3) is looking to be the year the program finally begins to climb out of the abyss.

I'm not expecting 10 wins... but I am expecting an improvement (6 - 7 wins)

I'm not seeing this with green/gold goggles or not holding Taggart without any faults... some of his decisions have left me scratching my head.

But I honestly think some of those decisions were based on what he had to work with.

As USF2011Grad points out.. some of the players were just not good.

If CWT is calling the plays, we will lose.

He couldn't keep up with that snails pace offense he ran the last two years. He couldn't keep up in the spring game. What makes anyone think he will suddenly be able to get plays in now?

Because he said he was disappointed in the pace of the spring game?

HE SETS THE PACE!

I'm concerned about this, too.  There were too many times last year with the QB looking to the sideline with a panic expression on his face while the play clock was running down to nothing.  This has to be fixed.  I thought it would be fixed last year, but it wasn't.  We had some delay of games and false starts--but then again, I think we had some false starts even after we were coming off a time out that we called to avoid a delay of game.   When the play did get in just in time, it probably still caused some confusion with the call coming in so late.  There is really no excuse for these mistakes.  Again, let's hope they've addressed this and found a solution.

The season has the potential to be even uglier.
