I think we were snake bit after Leavitt. If we had good administrators, Lou Holtz Jr. would have never been hired.

Yes, Holtz looked good on paper. BUT. But he wasn't a program re-builder.

Leavitt had installed his version of football (recruit athletes and let them run wild with emotions) and Holtz tried to adapt it to how "others played football" (system football) and what how he understood football. It only took a few years and it all went to hell. No B.J. Daniels and no new system = complete failure.

In comes CWT; it was three years too late when he came in. I wish we had him here right after Leavitt (with the experience CWT had when USF hired him, of course). So, yes, that made it impossible, but you know what I mean.

We lost a lot of years -and a lot of football games.

(1) We needed a new system with the right players (only Leavitt could run that system!). (2) We needed a paradigm shift in attitude and commitment after bottoming out. (3) We needed a new defense.

CWT basically started at the bottom: he was given the keys to a broken-down Porsche.

In my opinion, he's done great:

(1) Immediately, he got the right defensive coordinator and the defense was fixed.

(2) He's recruited the players that will fit the new system; he's on par with the talent Leavitt brought in.

(3) He's installed a new system, one that works for rebuilding from scratch, as exemplified by Stanford football.

(4) New attitude: I think there's a new sense of pride now.

(5) Solid staff: I think it's the best staff USF football has ever had.

(6) He's been getting help from his NFL mentors on key moves with the program.

Are we there yet? Nope. Including this season, I think we are two years away. It's 65/35 that we will make a bowl this year (too many young players in key positions). Next year, bowling for sure. The year after that, we will be very strong, top-25 ranking.

Here is one on field positive... he was the first USF coach to beat UConn and Cincinnati in the same season.

If we had just a below average offense last year I bet we could have won 6 plus games last year.

Offense takes longer to turn around I hope to see atleast 4 or more wins this season.

We can all 2nd guess the Holtz hiring which did not work out. But at the time it was considered a heck of a signing. Holtz turned down a few BCS jobs prior to the USF offer. Did it work? NO. That being said it was considered a very good hire at the time.

I think that sums it up perfectly.
